Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  
The Chair of Systems is a 12-month, tenure-track position who serves as part
of the senior library management team with leadership responsibility for
planning, developing, implementing, managing, operating, and executing the
entire library's expanding computing environment of web-based services, mobile
applications, and electronic resources. The incumbent helps to define and
articulate the vision, strategic directions, and priorities for information
technology in a dynamic environment that values creativity, teamwork, and
innovation. In addition, this position provides leadership in coordinating and
defining system requirements and tasks for library-wide projects and
initiatives. The incumbent maintains awareness of developments in emerging
technologies related to academic libraries, particularly digital library
infrastructure and content delivery. This position is responsible for the
dissemination and digital representation of bibliographic data and assessment
of information's effectiveness for current patron needs and usability
expectations. He or she provides a broad vision of a modern academic library's
role online. Electronic Resources Unit is housed within the Systems Department
so the chair works closely with issues surrounding e-resources. The incumbent
works in active partnership with all library departments. The Department
manages a number of servers, a large and growing storage network, ILLiad,
Serials Solutions, and the Library's Millennium ILS and Encore discovery
platform.

  
ISU librarians are expected to participate in university and library
governance and to engage in professional activities, including research and
publication, in order to attain tenure and promotion. All library faculty are
expected to meet promotion and tenure standards.

  
**Specific Responsibilities**  

  * Ensures the success of the faculty and staff within the Systems Department
  * Provides training on all aspects of Millennium and Encore to library staff
  * Develops and supports tables and parameters within Millennium Circulation, Serials, Acquisitions, Cataloging, and Web OPAC modules
  * Develops reports and lists from within Millennium and provides training on creation of individualized bibliographic reports
  * Advises library directors within the Library Consortium of Vigo Countyincluding Indiana State University, Rose Hulman Institute of Technology, Saint Mary of the Woods College, and Vigo County Public Library?on issues related to Millennium, Sierra, and Encore Discovery services
  * Coordinates acquisition of new products with Innovative Interfaces
  * Chairs the Library Technology Committee
  * Chairs the Library Web Committee
  * Guides overall environment for library's electronic resources
  * Assesses overall success of department as well as produces data-driven iterative reports of new technological directions
  * Conducts usability studies of website
  * Provides training to library faculty and staff in the use of new digital tools and formats.
  * Serves as resource person on key issues in the library digital environment
  * Experiments with and tests cutting-edge digitization techniques
  * Participates in professional organizations, research, writing, and other scholarly activities
  * Actively participates on Library committees or projects and University committees
  * Collaborates with library departments on digitization initiatives including digital preservation
  * Answers campus-wide questions about copyright and licenses or permissions and provides information on best practices on compliance issues as appropriate.
  * Performs other duties as assigned
**Required Education**  

  * American Library Association-accredited degree in library or information science
**Required Skills**

  * Working knowledge of XML, HTML and related web technologies.
  * Working knowledge of MARC standards and metadata schemes appropriate for digital information.
  * Theoretical and practical knowledge of the application of technology in the academy.
  * Knowledge of emerging technologies.
  * Collaborative work ethic and the ability to build effective partnerships.
  * Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, and to interact successfully with colleagues, administration, staff, patrons, and donors.
  * Must be innovative, collaborative, flexible, student-centered, and service-oriented.
**Required Experience**  

  * Minimum of five years of progressively responsible management and supervisory experience in a technical setting including experience with Microsoft Windows, applications, servers, programming design, installation, and maintenance
  * Previous managerial experience, preferably in an academic library
  * Knowledge and experience in managing team-based projects and organizations.
**Preferred Education**  

  * Second Master's degree in technology or related field
**Preferred Experience**  

  * Previous systems experience in an academic library setting
  * Experience with Millennium ILS
  * Experience in teaching technology to faculty and students.
  * Previous work in designing and maintaining web pages and production of interactive web sites, including video streaming.
  * Experience with core library technology systems: integrated library system, resource discovery, federated search, link resolver, proxy server, interlibrary loan, and e-reserve systems.
  * Experience with user testing and assessment of software systems.
  * Experience with any programming languages.
