An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute and AAM accredited, the Japanese
American National Museum (www.janm.org) is recognized as one of the nation's
premier cultural museums.
The National Museum is located adjacent to the new Metro Gold Line in the
historic Little Tokyo/Arts district in downtown Los Angeles, a neighborhood
that has experienced an exciting revitalization with diverse new restaurants,
shops, luxury apartments, and nightlife.
The Web Technologist is responsible for technical aspects of the National
Museum's dynamic web applications. The Web Technologist works closely with the
Web unit and other staff to maintain the institution's websites, primarily:
[janm.org](http://janm.org), [DiscoverNikkei.org](http://DiscoverNikkei.org),
and [ncdemocracy.org](http://ncdemocracy.org); and provide support for other
web projects: [blog.janm.org](http://blog.janm.org),
[janmstore.com](http://janmstore.com), and [remembrance-project.com](http
://remembrance-project.com). The Web Technologist develops technical
strategies and plans for the institution's web presence, and finds or develops
tools to enhance its day-to-day operations.
Bachelors degree preferred, at least 4 years of experience working with
dynamic web applications and 2 years administering web servers.
Willingness to learn and apply new skills. Ability to multi-task and
prioritize is essential. Ability to work well under pressure to meet
deadlines. Excellent organizational skills and be detail oriented. Act on own
initiative to educate oneself and seek out solutions to technical issues.
Demonstrate commitment and flexibility at all times in order to ensure high
quality service. Knowledge of Japanese American/Nikkei history and culture a
plus. Ability to use internet-based tools to enhance collaboration with team
members and website users.
The following skills are required: Solid grasp of Python, PHP, SQL, XHTML,
CSS, and Javascript. Experience in configuring and maintaining Linux web
servers. Knowledge of basic graphic design, page layout, and image
optimization. Understanding of website architecture, usability issues, and
browser peculiarities. Understanding of internationalization (i18n) and
localization, especially Japanese. Experience using Django or other web
frameworks and customizing open-source CMS software such as Drupal and
MediaWiki.
The following skills are considered useful and preferred: Git or other version
control system; Redmine or other web-based project management software; RSS
and podcasting.
