The Library at Carleton University invites applications from qualified
candidates for the position of **Department Head of Systems**. This is a
preliminary (tenure track) appointment at the rank of Librarian 3 or 4. The
term of office for a Library Department Head shall normally be five (5) years;
renewal is possible within the terms of the collective agreement.

  
Under the general direction of the Associate University Librarian (Research,
Scholarship and Technology), the incumbent is
responsible for co-ordination and management of all
operations and staff of the Systems Department; for establishing the goals,
priorities and procedures for the department; for the technical development
and management of IT systems, networks and digital developments in the
Library. The incumbent works in close collaboration with department heads,
administrative and academic departments to develop such systems and services;
assists in representing the Library to individuals and groups on and off
campus; and performs other related duties.

  
The incumbent also contributes to general operations and support for existing
technology, including process documentation, training, and liaison with other
departments, as well as the development
and implementation of systems and services related to assigned area of
specialization.

  
Applicants must have an undergraduate degree plus a Master's degree in Library
and Information Science from an accredited library school or equivalent and at
least five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in Library,
Information Management or IT fields, with at least three (3) years' experience
in information technology, web development and/or programming. Experience in
academic or research libraries is preferred.

  
In addition, applicants must have:

  
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of library policies and operations, especially in relation to the digitization, storage, management, preservation and delivery of information in an electronic environment;  
  
- Thorough knowledge of academic teaching and research program needs in terms of systems support and digital library services;  
  
- Significant understanding of systems implementation and integration, technical standards, information architecture and web development environments;  
  
- Experience with work-flow and use-case modeling, process analysis, and testing;  
  
- Experience implementing new software, technology or processes on departmental or organizational scale;  
  
- Ability to engage effectively in analysis, planning, and goal setting; demonstrated flexibility and innovative approaches to problem-solving;  
  
- Demonstrated project management skills and experience, including process review, requirements setting, and proposal development;  
  
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with others to promote positive organizational change;  
  
- Strong leadership and team-building skills in order to manage, motivate, and develop the staff of a major library department in an effective, productive, and positive manner;  
  
- Excellent oral, visual, and written communication skills.  
  
The MacOdrum Library promotes excellence at Carleton University by collecting,
preserving, and providing access to information resources and services for our
teaching, learning, research and administrative communities, wherever they are
located.

  
The Library has a strategic plan which is closely aligned to the University's
strategic plan, Defining Dreams, and to the Carleton Academic Plan. Key
priorities for the Library are scholarly communication, undergraduate creative
and critical enquiry, digitization and preservation of archives and special
collections; research data management including geospatial and social science
datasets.

  
The Library consists of a main building at the heart of the campus which holds
over 3.7 million items and an on-campus storage facility with a capacity of
800,000 volumes. There are 135 FTE positions in the Library
including 28 librarians, 80 support staff, 6 management staff and many part-
time student positions. The Library participates in co-operative ventures with
area libraries and museums as well as libraries in research institutions
across Canada. It is also part of the Ontario Scholars Portal consortium of
academic libraries.

  
Applications will be accepted until July 27, 2012, and must include a
statement of interest, a current resume or curriculum vitae. Those shortlisted
candidates will also be asked to do a presentation on a relevant topic.
Additionally, candidates must provide the name of three
references. If candidates are short listed, their
references will be expected to provide a letter of support to the search
committee.
