The Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library at The University of Montana seeks a
creative and dynamic leader for the position of Digital Initiatives Librarian.
This is a twelve-month tenure track position at the rank of Assistant
Professor.

The Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library is the largest library in the state of
Montana with a tradition of collaboration with a variety of state and regional
library partners. The Mansfield Library is a leader in the state in the use of
technology to extend services and collections to the citizens and university's
global community. It is also the Regional Depository Library for Montana. On
campus, the Mansfield Library is heavily used by students and researchers as a
learning and social place offering opportunities for cultural and intellectual
pursuits through its successful instructional programs, displays, special

About the job

Reporting to the Head of Access and Collection Services, this position
provides expertise and leadership in technical planning, development,
implementation, project management and support of the Library's digital
initiatives. Supervises the Digital Production unit. Designs and ensures
quality control of all digitization projects. Prioritizes and manages all
ongoing (insourced and outsourced) digital production projects and queues.
Leads the Digital Projects Committee and discusses projects and priorities
with the Collection Development Group. Works closely with Systems to maintain
all digitization equipment and share administrator duties for the library's
digital content management systems including CONTENTdm and Dspace.
Collaborates with Head of Archives and Special Collections, Digital Archivist,
Web Developer, and other appropriate library and campus personnel to develop,
describe, curate, preserve, manage, and provide access to digital projects.
Collaborates with Liaison Librarians to actively seek out and recruit new user
communities and content for digital projects and the institutional repository.
Maintains awareness of and engagement with trends, best practices, and
developments in library digitization, metadata and digital standards.
Coordinates and collaborates on assessment and usability studies of digitized
collections.

  
Required Qualifications:

  * Master's degree in library sciences from an ALA (American Library Association) accredited graduate program.
  * Demonstrated experience with digitization equipment and digital project management in a library environment.
  * Ability to meet standards for achieving tenure and promotion
  
The Successful Candidate Will:

  * Have knowledge and understanding of best practices, standards, issues, and trends in digital library development and scholarly communication issues.
  * Have experience with or knowledge of metadata standards (Dublin Core, MODS, METS, PREMIS).
  * Have familiarity with institutional repository systems and software requirements.
  * Demonstrate aptitude for complex, accurate, analytical work with close attention to details.
  * Demonstrate problem solving skills and flexibility.
  * Have supervisory experience.
  * Have demonstrated experience working with a diverse population.
  * Demonstrate self-motivation, individual initiative, and the ability to work in a fast paced changing environment and prioritize multiple assignments to ensure that departmental and library goals are met.
  * Demonstrate ability to learn and apply new technologies.
  * Have excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
  
Preferred Experience:

  * Experience with CONTENTdm, Dspace or other digital asset management systems preferably in an academic or research library.
  * Significant knowledge of and experience with XML including the transformation of XML using CSS and XSLT.
  * Familiarity with best practices for handling and digitizing special collections material.
  * Grant writing experience.
  * Data management experience.
  * Experience communicating in an academic environment about copyright, open access, and scholarly communication issues.
  * Experience with or knowledge of computer programming and scripting languages (e.g. JavaScript, SQL, and PHP).
  * Experience converting video and audio content to appropriate web formats.
  * Experience with assessment and usability studies.
  
Minimum Salary: $44,815
