An opportunity exists for a Library and Information professional with
substantial software development experience to join the existing Library
Systems team at the National University of Ireland, Galway. You will be an
adept in one or more modern scripting languages (e.g. Perl, Python, Ruby) and
likely have a portfolio of previously delivered projects or substantial
contributions to projects using a web framework, interacting with MySQL,
Oracle or other databases. You will have an extensive skills toolbox that
likely includes Java, SQL and XML. Most importantly you will have the capacity
and drive to acquire new skills and knowledge in an evolving technology
landscape and the interpersonal skills to appropriately evangelise where
necessary, perform accurate effort estimates and help to establish standards
for coding and for revision control.
The Digital Projects Developer will report to the Head of Organisational
Development and Performance. S/he will work as part of the Library staff team
and will have specific job contact with:
• Library senior management team and staff
• Library Systems team
• Digitisation and Institutional Repository Librarian
• Information Solutions and Services staff
• Academic staff, students and all users of Library services
• Administrative staff
• Staff assigned and managed for specific projects
• Other partners, project teams, internally and externally
• External service and systems suppliers and professional bodies
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Play a key role in priority digital projects as assigned, including but not
limited to:
• digital preservation frameworks
• interface development
• access control system integration
• Library operational data warehousing
• online course reading fulfilment
• research data management
• linked data deployment
• Develop and deploy expertise in relevant systems and technologies
• Write scripts to leverage existing vendor APIs
• Engage in depth with service providers and users to understand processes and
needs
• Implement optimal technology solutions to improve Library services,
workflows and processes within existing campus IT and administrative
frameworks
• Identify project opportunities and matching technologies
• Develop partnerships on-campus and externally
• Work closely with Information Solutions and Services staff
• Work with service suppliers and manage any outsourcing relationships
• Document, report and communicate project activity
• Manage and supervise the work of any assigned staff
• Engage with wider University and external initiatives as appropriate
• Participate in evening/weekend duty roster
• Perform other duties as may be assigned by the University Librarian
REQUIREMENTS:
Qualifications
• A degree, preferably in an IT-related discipline or with significant IT
content
• A recognised qualification in Librarianship, Information Studies or
Information Science
