THE UNIVERSITY: The University of Texas at Dallas is a
doctoral level, state supported component of The University of Texas System
located in suburban Richardson. The University provides 130
degrees (47 bachelors, 54 masters, and 29 doctoral programs) and has an
enrollment of over 19,000 students. Nationally recognized
for its programs in management, audiology, engineering/computer science, and
brain and behavioral sciences, the University also provides imaginative
interdisciplinary programs in the humanities, policy studies, political
science, economics, and geographical information sciences.

  
THE LIBRARY: The Libraries of the University of Texas at
Dallas consist of more than 2.5 million volumes, 63,000 electronic journals,
1,000,000 electronic books, 15,000 media items, and over 2,000,000 microform
units. The Libraries employ more than 80 people, including
23 professionals. In support of UT Dallas's ascent to
premier research university status, the Library is an active participant in
the UT System Digital Library program, TexShare, and Amigos Library
Services. In addition, McDermott Library is a federal

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Eugene McDermott Library at the
University of Texas at Dallas invites applications and nominations for a
forward-thinking, service-oriented, collaborative leader for the position of
Head of Metadata Services. Reporting to the Associate
Director for Technical Services, this administrative position is responsible
for defining and implementing the services provided by the metadata and
processing units (Ex Libris' Voyager as well as the migration to Alma as an
early adopter). The Head of Metadata Services will be
responsible for managing the workflow of cataloging and processing of all
resources for the library, including print and electronic monographs, print
and electronic serials, integrating resources, multimedia, government
documents and special collections archival materials as well as administration
and management of the Library's link resolving software,
SFX. The Head of Metadata Services will demonstrate
proficiency in the modification and bulk loading of vendor record sets. The
Head of Metadata Services will have a working knowledge of national and local
standards in AACR2, RDA, FRBR, LCSH and classification, LCRI and CONSER
practices. The Head of Metadata Services is responsible for
managing all unit personnel.

  
As a member of the Libraries' administrative group, the Head of Metadata
Services shares responsibility for developing and implementing the workflow of
copy and original cataloging for the evolving role of research libraries in
the digital age. In addition to providing leadership and
vision for the Library Metadata Services Unit, the Head of Metadata Services
will act as a liaison to the Acquisitions, Reference, Collection Development,
Circulation, Interlibrary Loan, Special Collections, Reserves and Information
Literacy Departments to plan, develop and implement streamlined procedures and
policies based on evolving needs of library patrons. The Head of Metadata
Services will demonstrate a commitment to personal professional development
through scholarly research and publication, presentations, and participation
in national professional associations.

  
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum qualifications: MLS
from an ALA-accredited program is required. 5 years of
experience managing professional and paraprofessional cataloging and
processing staff. Working knowledge of new and emerging
trends and practices in descriptive metadata; experience in
handling large sets of vendor records for bulk loading into the library
integrated software system; demonstrated management and supervisory
experience; experience providing excellent customer
service; demonstrated excellent oral and written
communication skills; and commitment to the continuing development of personal
knowledge and skills in the area of metadata management as it applies to
libraries.

education and experience for a 12-month administrative/professional
