NOAA's Office of Coast Survey (OCS) maintains cartographic products dating
back to the late 1700s. OCS' Historical Map and Chart Collection website
presently showcases almost 38,000 records with plans for further expansion.
These digital archives are recorded in a geospatial database and maintained at
OCS. This position is a critical support function with tasks such as data
inventory development and management using a relational database as well as
managing the physical images stored on disk. There are also opportunities for
Web development. The selected candidate will be responsible for managing and
improving the digital records (for Web and archive).
Required Skills
2 years of practical experience in all stages of digital records management--
scanning to inventory to archiving to Web dissemination. Must be proficient at
data entry and technical documentation. Additionally, must be able to take
initiative and solve problems independently as well as with a team. Experience
with programming (.NET Framework) and/or experience with developing and
maintaining relational databases (PostgreSQL with PostGIS) are strongly
desired. Experience with various image formats, primarily PDF, TIFF, and JPG,
is desired. Familiarity with geographic coordinates through experience in geo-
referencing raster images and/or utilizing geographic information systems is a
plus. Some familiarity with NOAA's nautical chart products and/or history is a
plus. There may be one to two weeks of travel to attended required training
yearly.
Must be able to pass a background investigation to obtain a security badge to
enter the applicable government facility.
Education
BS in library science, GIS management, geography, cartographic science,
related discipline, or equivalent. MS preferred.
