[University of Michigan Library
IT](http://www.lib.umich.edu/library-information-technology) is hiring two
Systems Programmers to work on a variety of projects, including
* processing large quantities of digital video and migrating existing digital video to a new archive platform
* conceiving/building a system architecture for mirroring very large digital archives across five major archive services
* maintaining and scaling the 0.75PB archive and web service infrastructure for the [HathiTrust](http://www.hathitrust.org/) partnership
Ideal candidates for these positions would be comfortable developing complex
software using scripting languages such as Perl or Ruby and would also have
experience managing Linux systems, maybe even large storage systems. The work
will involve working with most or all of those technologies.
This is _not_ your conventional, mundane web or database application
development work. Every job posting out there says that creative, talented
individuals are sought, but here, we actually mean it: our work involves using
high-end systems capable of processing very large amounts of data, and we
practice the state of the art in digital library technology. It's an
opportunity to work under the hood, hands-on, with an internationally-
recognized digital archive that is making a real difference in the modern
digital library landscape.
The two individuals hired will join an existing, highly talented staff of four
in [Library IT Core Services](http://www.lib.umich.edu/library-information-
technology/core-services) who are responsible for server and storage
infrastructure and data handling. They will also work closely with other
departments in Library IT, approximately 45 staff in all, who develop and
manage bibliographic metadata systems and web applications and who analyze and
improve user experience. The University of Michigan Library is nationally
known for its leadership in the field and provides a forward-thinking,
energetic working environment.
The positions are _2-year term-limited_ with the possibility of extension.
The University of Michigan offers competitive salaries and a generous
portfolio of benefits.
