The University Library Institutional Repository Specialist works respectfully
and cooperatively with employees of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library to
perform duties under general supervision, but works independently to achieve
specified outcomes reporting to the University Library's Technical Services
Manager and receiving work lead direction from the University Library's Head
of Cataloging. King Library is a unique collaboration between the City of San
Jose and San Jose State University.

  
The purpose of this position is to oversee all contributions (from SJSU
faculty, offices, and students) to the San Jose State University ScholarWorks
Institutional Repository; establish copyright permissions for publications;
maintain submissions from contributors; provide expertise to campus faculty;
create and uploads digital files; and create metadata in approved formats. The
incumbent also hires and schedules student assistants and monitors annual
student assistant budget allocation.

  
Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to:

  * Provides access to the SJSU ScholarWorks institutional repository by creating metadata and uploading digital files in appropriate formats.
  * Uses experienced judgment to interpret, analyze, and adapt procedures; determines approaches; and find solutions to specific and complex problems.
  * Develops educational materials for SJSU faculty on various issues around publishing in SJSU ScholarWorks using tools such as LibGuides, Captivate, WebEx, etc.
  * Utilizes Bepress editing tools and fully understands the database structure of the Digital Commons institutional repository database.
  * Advises faculty authors on archival standards for published articles as related to U.S. copyright law.
  * Utilizes Sherpa/Romeo, a worldwide publisher copyright policies and self-archiving database, to investigate and interpret thousands of publisher copyright policies.
  * Maintains complete and thorough documentation of all communication with faculty authors and publishers.
  * Recruits, trains and oversees the work of student assistants who support the activities of the SJSU ScholarWorks Institutional Repository.
  * Monitors student assistant budget and schedules the student assistants to maintain consistent help throughout the year.
  * Participates on library committees and taskforces, especially those concerned with Technical Services.
  * Attends appropriate training sessions.
Education and Experience:

  
A High School diploma or equivalent, and three years progressively responsible
full-time library experience or equivalent is required. Any combination of
education and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities
will be considered. Bachelor's degree preferred. Prefer experience in project
coordination. Prefer experience working with Digital Commons and copyright
regulations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  * Experience with copyright regulations
  * 3 years of library experience
  * Experience with library technology systems
  * Experience creating metadata
  * Bachelor's degree
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  * Knowledge of library operations in Technical Services and their relation to overall library operations.
  * Thorough knowledge of library methods, procedures and practices; English grammar, business writing, punctuation and spelling; Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports.
  * Thorough knowledge of the library's collection; classification schemes, including Library of Congress and Dewey decimal systems; on-line catalog; and computer applications in the library; library terminology, general bibliographic forms and structures.
  * Through knowledge of institutional standards pertaining to copyright and the ability to interpret and apply them, as well as explain them to others to ensure compliance.
  * Thorough knowledge of external on-line databases, database management, integrated online library systems, word processing, spreadsheets, Internet and e-mail.
  * Working knowledge of library budget, accounting procedures, allocation processes and ability to apply this knowledge to assist in handling accounts and the budget process.
  * Ability to investigate and research complex problems, including analyzing and interpreting information.
  * Ability to be flexible and adapt quickly to new assignments and work under pressure.
  * Ability to work independently using relevant knowledge to determine the best course of action.
  * Ability to interpret, modify, and verify library records within established rules and procedures; understand and operate library computer systems and use the resulting output.
