Reporting to the Associate Dean for Research and Informatics, the Web
Developer will participate in University Libraries efforts to integrate the
library, its services and resources, into Virginia Tech's research and
learning environments. The incumbent will split time between user interface
development for the library's digital services (e.g. virtual research and
learning communities) and web development for externally funded research
projects. Virginia Tech University Libraries is looking for an energetic,
motivated individual with an entrepreneurial spirit to work in a team-based
environment with VT researchers and librarians to advance its strategic
directions, goals, and objectives.
40% Design, develop, implement, and
optimize user interfaces and visualizations for open source web-based digital
platforms intended to add value to VT researchers' scholarly communications
within virtual communities; build modern, user-sensitive interfaces for
virtual communities that support a variety of academic and research needs,
connecting people, information, resources, and discoveries.
20% Perform system administration for
virtual community platforms (currently Drupal CMS), including module
evaluation and installation, workflow design and implementation, information
organization, and theme development; executes technical processes involved
with user support for virtual communities, including - but not limited to -
monitoring and tracking usage, debugging software, troubleshooting problems,
and adjusting settings as needed.
20% Work both independently and in partnership with others
in the Libraries, including technologists, designers, and subject librarians,
in the development of user interfaces; present design mockups, test use cases,
and create appropriate documentation; serve on informatics related sponsored
research project teams, collaboratively evaluating and communicating
stakeholder needs and designing and executing work plans.
10% Provide user training to librarians and VT researchers;
create templates for web authoring and user guidelines/suggested best
10% Assess user needs and regularly
solicit feedback from internal and external stakeholders; plan and conduct
usability testing as needed; develop basic web graphics; assist with
interfaces of other digital library web-based tools; and support
interoperability among various systems supported by the Libraries.
Required Qualifications: Required: Master's degree in Computer Science,
Information Systems or equivalent advanced degree in a related field;
experience managing digital projects; experience with Drupal or other open
source content management system platforms; experience in web design,
scripting, and programming web-based applications; excellent communication and
project management skills; ability to set priorities and make deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications: Preferred: Proficiency in XHTML, CSS, DHTML, XML and
Apache, software development methods, jQuery, Ajax, and search engine
optimization; ability to build complex SQL queries against relational
databases; experience with data visualization and usability testing;
demonstrated capacity for developing documentation and training material;
excellent troubleshooting and problem solving skills.
