JOB SUMMARY:

This position is located in the Discovery Services Division of the Smithsonian

  
Institution Libraries. The employee serves as the Interlibrary Loan
Coordinator and works closely with Discovery Services and Research Services
staff to provide integrated and efficient workflows for centralized
interlibrary loan and document delivery for the entire Smithsonian Libraries'
system.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  
Pass Pre-employment Background Investigation

May be required to serve an 18-month probationary period for supervisors.

Maintain a Bank Account for Direct Deposit/Electronic Transfer

Males born after 12/31/59 must be registered with Selective Service.

  
DUTIES:

Supervises (2) library technicians in the Interlibrary Loan
department.

Responsible for the borrowing and lending of interlibrary loans and
fulfillment of document delivery requests from all SIL branches and external
libraries.

Serves as the resident expert on complex citation verification, and resolves
discrepancies and inaccuracies when the bibliographic data is abbreviated,
incomplete, or incorrectly cited.

Collaborates to establish and maintain guidelines on methods and priorities of
requests for SI researchers and for filling incoming requests from other
libraries.

Incorporates use of digital and full text resources and provides creative
solutions and uses of electronic resources for document delivery.

Analyzes and recommends new and emerging services and tools for delivery of
research materials.

  
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Experience: One year of full-time experience at the GS-07 level that is close
or similar to the work of this job. The experience includes activities such as
providing interlibrary loan services in an academic or specialized research
library using an automated system. Part-time and/or unpaid experience related
to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and
months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours
worked each week. Or Education: Two full years of progressively higher level
graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent degree related to the
position may be substituted to meet the experience requirements. Or a
Combination: Education and experience may be combined to meet the basic

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications
described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be
evaluated further against the following criteria:

  
Ability to supervise a diverse staff.

Skill and technical expertise with interlibrary loan management software and
other modes of information access and delivery.

Knowledge of consortial and reciprocal resource sharing agreements.

Skill with creating, maintaining, and applying collection policies.

Demonstrated knowledge of current activities and trends in the access and
management of electronic collections, journals and resources: aggregators,
discovery systems, the ANSI/NISO OpenURL framework standard, link resolver
software and services, and other initiatives that provide and enhance access.

Ability to solve complex data and workflow problems.
