Vanderbilt University Libraries seeks an energetic and
talented colleague for the position of Geographic Information Systems
Coordinator. Reporting to the Director for Scholarly
Communication, the GIS Coordinator provides consulting services and
educational outreach to departments and schools at the university as the
leader of a library-wide GIS program. As a member of an evolving scholarly
communications team, the GIS Coordinator will provide consultation and support
to faculty, staff, and students across the university to assist with their
teaching and research. The Coordinator must work collaboratively with other
departments--academic, administrative, and library--to promote the use of GIS
as a research tool and methodology. The GIS Coordinator is responsible for
planning, creating, implementing, and teaching GIS technologies and
facilitating software and data access through both individual and classroom
training sessions. The Coordinator will play an active role in sharing
information, training, developing service priorities, conducting research into
emerging GIS standards, and creating proposals for further development and
support. The GIS Coordinator will also act as the manager of the Census
Information Center and will work in conjunction with the Census Bureau to
serve Census data users on campus. The CIC manager will provide consultation
and support with regard to accessing and manipulating Census data.

  
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  
**Reference, research assistance and instruction**  
• Provides assistance to members of the university community in finding
geospatial data, and data that can be used in geospatial analyses

• Provides assistance in the use of software for geospatial analysis and
cartographic display

• Provides instruction to groups in the use and acquisition of GIS software
and geospatial data

• Teaches members of the university community to develop geospatial mash-ups
using Google Maps and other sources of GIS data

• Manages the Vanderbilt Census Information Center

• Provides assistance and instructions to members of the university community
in accessing and manipulating Census data

  
**Participation in library-wide data and GIS development**  
• Develops, implements and coordinates library-wide GIS activities and
services

• Assesses the needs of the GIS user community and recommends and participates
in software, hardware, and data acquisition

• Develops and maintains a campus web-based gateway to a collection of digital
geospatial data, including locally produced data as well as commercial,
government, and other institutional data

• Develops web presence on the Heard Library website for information regarding
GIS and the Census and collaborates with library staff in related areas to
develop a web presence for the Library's broader data services

• Assists with adding location-based social networking, where appropriate, to
mobile library web services

• Develops methodologies for assessing the success of the geographic
information system services, and identifies means for improvement

  
**Participation in campus-wide GIS activities**  
• Serves as campus-wide leader and coordinator for GIS-related questions and
services

• Facilitates communication and collaboration among GIS users on campus,
including the coordination of an annual GIS Day event

• Identifies ongoing campus user needs for GIS, digital geospatial data, and
Census information

• Serves as a liaison with centers of geospatial work across campus

• Assists Director for Scholarly Communications to develop awareness of the
digital humanities across the campus

  
**Research and Development**  
• Researches Open Geospatial Consortium (OCG) standards and provides timely
updates to librarians and faculty members about developing protocols and best
practices

• Researches and develops pilot projects using evolving GIS semantic standards
such as GeoSPARQL, Geospatial Ontologies, and Linked Spatiotemporal Data

• Researches and develops a service-oriented architecture for disseminating
geospatial data from institutional datasets

  
**Other**  
• Participates in library-wide and university activities and groups as
needed/assigned

  
**QUALIFICATIONS**: Bachelor's Degree and 3 years' relevant experience. Demonstrated competence with GIS software, digital geospatial data, and cartographic concepts. Demonstrated interest in the applications of current and emerging technologies to meet the changing GIS needs of users. Knowledge of ESRI software including ArcInfo, ArcGIS products and extensions. Knowledge of an appropriate GIS scripting language, preferably Python. Demonstrated ability to teach GIS concepts and techniques effectively. Ability to consult effectively with users on their GIS needs. Demonstrated understanding of Census data. Strong service orientation and high degree of computer literacy. Excellent communication and presentation skills and ability to work well with faculty, students, and staff. Enthusiasm for working in a collaborative environment.  
  
**ENVIRONMENT**: Vanderbilt University consists of ten schools and colleges with an enrollment of over 11,000. The Jean and Alexander Heard Library at Vanderbilt University has a staff of over 200, an annual budget exceeding $24 million, over 3.5 million volumes, 3.1 million microforms, and 55,000 serials, of which some 47,000 are available electronically. The Heard Library includes nine libraries, the campus learning management system and Vanderbilt Television News Archives. The Library is a member of the Association of Research Libraries, the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries, and other organizations, as well.
