The Cornell University Library is seeking an Art History Image Cataloger.
Under the direction of the Discovery Metadata Librarian and the administrative
supervision of the CMS Administrative Supervisor, creates original metadata
records for art history visual resources following the appropriate
international standards and CUL policies. This work includes the creation of
name, subject, location, and other headings for use in these records, as well
the assignment of appropriate subject headings and classification based on
complex subject analysis of the resources. Determines the relative priority
of, and the type of cataloging needed for materials in the CUL digital image
collections. Maintains liaison with the relevant public services and
collection development staff for visual resources, as well as effective
working relationships with colleagues in Library Technical Services and
throughout the Library and University.
This is a full time, one year term position.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience or training in Art History or
related field. Ability to exercise considerable judgment and self-direction on
matters related to image cataloging. Ability to work well alone, with minimal
supervision, and in groups. Knowledge of at least one Western European foreign
language.
Consistency in and aptitude for detailed work. Good interpersonal, writing and
communication skills. Preferred: One to two years image cataloging experience,
preferably in a research library. Advanced degree in Art History.
Excellent knowledge of image database software (ARTstor, SharedShelf, and LUNA
preferred). Knowledge of VRA Core or other non-MARC metadata, and authorities
formats. Knowledge of current metadata trends and ability to understand image
cataloging within this context. Ability to provide on-the-job
training/guidance to others who do similar work. Demonstrated experience
working with relational databases.
