This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position and is available immediately.

Primary Function:

Developing our institutional archive to meet the Society of American
Archivists' Guidelines for College and University Archives which includes the
processing of print and photographic material, developing policies and
procedures for our historical repository and institutional records management
and planning for the creation of a digital repository.

  
Duties and Responsibilities:

Serve as the archive project director and oversee all project activities.

Coordinate the processing, handling, preserving, and organizing of all
unprocessed and new print materials according to best practices of the Society
of American Archivists and Association of College and Research Libraries.

Research, select and implement archival management software in conjunction
with the IT department. The archivist will schedule software training for
library staff.

Develop institutional standards for data entry and descriptive metadata using
standards and best practices developed by the Society of American Archivists,
Minnesota Digital Library, the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative, and others to
create a searchable catalog. Supervise data entry by library staff.

Create finding aids for archival materials

Conduct an institution-wide survey and create a records retention and
disposition schedule with MCAD leadership.

Determine which materials will be relocated to the archives in conjunction
with college departments.

Create policies and procedures for collection development, materials
processing, access, and use .

Train staff in archival acquisition, accessioning, processing, access, and
records retention procedures.

Develop a plan for the digitization and transcription of the approximately
1,000 hours of archived audio, video, and film recordings of artist and
faculty lectures using best practices from the Minnesota Historical Society,
the Minnesota Digitization Library, and other experts in the field .

Research and select digital repository software in conjunction with the IT
department. Proposals will be solicited through a formal bidding process and
services offered to a minimum of three vendors.

Provide work direction to staff members and student workers.

Prepare for mid-project grant site visit and write the final grant report to
the granting agency.

  
Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Master's Degree in Information Science or Library Science,
Archiving, or similar degree with specialty in archives management from an
ALA-accredited program

  
Minimum of 2-3 years professional experience in an archive or special
collections repository Archival certification is preferred

  
Strong working and theoretical knowledge of archival management, records
management and digital repositories

  
Knowledge of cataloging and metadata standards, such as MARC, LCSH, AACR2r,
DACS, EAD, Dublin Core, and VRACore

  
Experience:

Experience in developing and maintaining archival collections, processing
archives, preparing finding aids, and working with institutional records
within a records management program;

Demonstrated ability in project management;

Demonstrated ability to adapt to and implement relevant technologies;

Prior experience in supervision and staff training;

Experience in digital asset management for special collections, digital
records management, digital humanities, or a comparable field;

Experience in preservation, cataloging, and digital conversion of audio and
video materials;

Experience working in a higher educational institution preferred

  
Skills:

Excellent Leadership, planning, and organizational skills;

Ability to work well independently in an efficient and detailed manner;

Superior ability to prioritize tasks and balance projects;

Excellent interpersonal and supervisory skills;

Ability to collaborate and work in a collegial manner;

Strong written and oral communication skills;

Strong computer proficiency, knowledge of open source software desired;

Ability to lift up to 40 lbs

Grant-funded 14 month duration

Grant Start Date: 2/15/2013

Grant End Date: 4/14/2014
