The Metadata Librarian works under the direction of the Discovery Enhancement
Librarian to produce and manage MARC and non-MARC metadata, for university and
library projects and materials, including digitization projects, special
format material and electronic resources. This position
also selects appropriate metadata schema and standards, performs database
maintenance activities, documents procedures and processes, and assists with
training of staff in descriptive metadata production. It
requires knowledge of multiple metadata standards, such as MARC21, RDA, and
Dublin Core. The Metadata Librarian works closely with all
sections of the library, particularly the Virtual Services Librarian and the
Digital Projects and Preservation section, to ensure best practices in the
production and control of metadata for the library's digital projects and
collections.
Essential Functions:
Produces Non-MARC Metadata. Works closely with library and
campus wide stakeholders to develop and maintain metadata records, controlled
vocabularies, and data dictionaries for digital materials including electronic
theses and dissertations, LibGuides, non-library projects and materials, and
various digital collections.

Produces MARC Metadata for special format library
resources. Performs MARC original and copy cataloging of
electronic, archival and other special format materials in accordance with
appropriate national and state university library standards, using tools such
as OCLC Connexion, Cataloger's Desktop, and LC Classification Web.
Selects appropriate metadata schema and standards.
Responsible for selecting appropriate metadata schema and standards for the
type of material being described and ensuring the interoperability of data in
systems such as Ex Libris' ALEPH, the Florida Dark Archive, and Bepress'
Digital Commons.
Performs database maintenance and metadata management
functions. Using software such as Excel, Islandora, XnView,
Adobe Bridge, or MarcEdit for metadata creation, harvesting, or editing,
performs automated and manual functions including global editing, and batch
loading and archiving of records. In addition, performs and
manages authority control processes in the library catalog and other metadata
repositories and develops conceptual models and methods to crosswalk records
between discovery systems.

Develops and documents procedures and policies. Formulates,
documents, and implements policies, procedures, and best practices for
metadata workflows assists in the development of electronic resource batch
load profiles and processes, and collects statistics on activities.
Trains staff involved in descriptive metadata production.
Assists the Discovery Enhancement Librarian in the training of staff to
perform metadata activities. This includes batch load
processes, non-MARC description, and quality control of metadata from non-ILS
repositories.
Other Job Accountabilities:
Serves as the library liaison to a University academic department and
participates in collection development and purchasing decisions for the
library materials budget in that department's topical area.

Serves on Library, University, and statewide committees or project teams as
appropriate.

Maintains current awareness of campus issues and developments in library and
information science.

Participates in professional organizations and in professional development
activities as appropriate.
Job Qualifications:
Requires an ALA-accredited Master's of Library Science degree or equivalent,
plus at least 2 years of experience creating and editing metadata using
automated data management systems. Additional requirements:
working knowledge of MARC 21 and LCSH; familiarity with non-MARC metadata
schemas (e.g. Dublin Core); and knowledge of metadata content standards for
library materials (e.g. AACR2, RDA, etc.).
Preferred:
A broad understanding of digital metadata management, the creation of metadata
dictionaries, and authority control using controlled vocabularies or
taxonomies; demonstrated ability to work with automated data management
systems such as Ex Libris' ALEPH or Bepress' Digital Commons; a familiarity
with emerging cataloging theories and concepts such as FRBR, linked data, and
RDF; knowledge of LC classification; proficiency with metadata creation and
global editing tools including, but not limited to, OCLC Connexion Client,
MarcEdit, and Excel; ability to learn new technologies and metadata standards
for multiple formats of materials; ability to multitask, prioritize, and work
both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced work environment;
experience training staff; and excellent oral and written communication
skills.
