Coordinator for Reference and Instruction Galvin Library
GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Coordinator for Reference and
Instruction is responsible for planning, management, and delivery of a broad
range of reference and instructional services in support of the university's
curriculum and mission. Reporting to the assistant dean for public services,
this position will provide and promote high quality and innovative services to
a diverse community of IIT users and beyond. The coordinator will collaborate
with the head of scholarly communications and assessment, as well as with
other subject librarians and the head of collection development on library
services.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Key Responsibility 1 Responsible for the creation,
integration, and presentation of programmatic elements of reference services
in a dynamic and changing environment, including research support, referral
service, and consortium cooperative efforts. Manage day‐to‐day activities of
reference and research services: hire, supervise, train, mentor, and evaluate
librarians and support staff; organize, supervise and schedule staff for desk
shifts; oversee staff assignments. Provide reference and information services
to students, faculty, and staff, which may require some evening and weekend
hours.
Key Responsibility 2 Lead the process that will identify
instructional needs and opportunities for teaching and learning programs for
students, and for engaging faculty in information literacy initiatives. Work
collaboratively with branch and subject librarians to design, implement,
promote, and assess instructional programs for Galvin Library that will serve
individuals or groups, to be delivered in person and online, that facilitates
the use of scholarly and cross‐disciplinary resources, and
increases awareness of new research tools. Develop materials and tools that
will enhance the students' understanding of the research process in their
fields. Responsible for the application
of existing and emerging standards and procedures for the provision of
instructional services.
Key Responsibility 3 Serve as the subject liaison to the
faculty and students of assigned academic units at both the undergraduate and
graduate level to support their research and information needs. Participate
in library collection development activities to evaluate, acquire, discard,
organize, and maintain information resources in all formats to support the
university's curricula and research.
Key Responsibility 4 Oversee the maintenance and
development of the library website and ensure coordination of services with
library technology staff.
Key Responsibility 5 Collaborate on outreach and promotion
of library services, resources, and events including student and faculty
orientations. Contribute to strategic planning, seek opportunities for grant
and proposal writing, demonstrate an awareness of current issues in libraries,
and participate in professional activities and
organizations.

Communications: This position is expected to demonstrate
excellence in oral, written, and presentation communication skills,
collaborate with IIT campus partners to provide resources and services in an
environment that supports both learning and research, communicate effectively
with members of the public and
professional community, work cooperatively with staff at all IIT libraries and
participate in working groups and committees as necessary, and promote Galvin
Library to its internal constituency, to its university partners, and
externally to consortia and professional organizations.
Customer Service: This position provides service to
faculty, students, and staff at IIT's Main campus, appreciates a multicultural
academic and research environment, demonstrates a commitment to service
excellence, and represents IIT Libraries externally in professional
activities.
QUALIFICATIONS
Supervision & Budget Authority: Administrative and
functional supervision is exercised over two professional librarians, as well
as student employees in support of hours of service and operation. This
position does not have budget authority.
Education & Experience: MLS from an ALA‐accredited graduate
program and at least three to five years of experience working in public
services in an academic or research library that utilizes traditional as well
as innovative reference and/or instruction practices. Supervisory experience
is required.

library; set priorities; and communicate, share, evaluate and measure plans.
Ability to delegate responsibilities as appropriate, maintain an atmosphere

library objectives.
Ability to select, motivate, and coach teammates; provide for staff
development and continuing education opportunities; and foster employee
empowerment.
Experience in the theory and application of information literacy, and a desire
to pursue and institute
best practices for teaching and learning.
Proficiency in quickly adapting to and learning new methods of seeking
information, as well as the ability to share methods with colleagues and
users.
Broad understanding of the application of information technology in the
academic library, and how
technological change impacts the library user's experiences and daily
activities.
Well‐developed interpersonal and communication skills, initiative,
flexibility, creativity, and the ability to
maintain a service attitude that improves user perceptions.
Willingness to experiment, take risks, and accept responsibility for outcomes;
capacity to see the need for action and act appropriately; and the expertise
to monitor, analyze, and adapt current trends.
Evidence of potential to maintain an ongoing program of scholarship and
professional development.
