The McGill Library seeks an innovative, autonomous and resourceful librarian
to manage the current digital collections and work with the campus community
on digitization and preservation of the material and the library's special and
circulating collections of the Library of one of the world's most prestigious
research universities.

  
Reporting to the Senior Director Digital Initiatives, the Digitization &
Preservation Librarian supervises 3 IT staff responsible for the digitization
and preservation of the library's special and circulating
collections.

The Library takes as its motto: Information Service to demonstrate its commitment to the
delivery of innovative information products, services and programs of the
highest quality focused on client needs and supportive of
the University's strategic mission and directions. The Library proactively
supports the teaching, learning and research needs of faculty and students to
ensure that the university's strategic mission of excellence as a research
intensive, student-centred university is satisfied. Collection building is
based upon the premise of preference for electronic versions.

  
McGill Library has the largest collection in Quebec and is one of Canada's
largest academic libraries with access to over 6 million monographs and 80,000
online serials and databases. The library is a member of the Canadian
Association of Research Libraries (CARL), the Association of Research
Libraries (ARL), the Conference des recteurs et principaux des universites du
Quebec (CRÉPUQ), the Center for Research Libraries (CRL), and is the first
Canadian member of the HathiTrust Digital Library.

  
  
INFORMATION FOR PROSPECTIVE STAFF

DUTY STATEMENT

  
Primary Purpose of Position

  
To manage the current digital collections and work with the campus community
on digitization and preservation of the library's special and circulating
collections. Lead the development and the implementation of digital projects.
Provide advice in the acquisition of born-digital library material.

  
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  
• Manage the daily operations and supervise the staff of the Digitization &
Preservation group. Receive requests and evaluate requirements. Make
recommendations for appropriate methods of capture.

  
• Plan, schedule, direct the work and monitor the performance of the staff.
Train staff and other stakeholders.

  
• Communicate with vendors on issues related to hardware, software and
digitization of special formats.

  
• Develop and document efficient digital production workflows supporting the
creation of digital objects that conform to digital library standards.

  
• Develop digital preservation policies, guidelines and standards.

  
• Analyse the digital collections, the University Archives and the Inter-
Library Loans requests for the purposes of identifying and planning
preservation actions. Provide leadership for proposed digital preservation
projects.

  
• Participate in exhibit preparation for fundraising, development or outreach
activities.

  
• Work closely with cataloging staff, archivists, curators, collection
development staff to integrate digital preservation policy requirements into
broader organizational policies and procedures.

  
• Research, test, specify, and implement technology for a sustainable digital
preservation which will meet the ongoing management, access, and preservation
needs of the Library.

  
• Work with IT to develop an overall migration strategy to ensure that
material in standard and non-standard or obsolete digital formats will be
reformatted and /or refreshed regularly.

  
• Develop and maintain disaster recovery planning and policy document for
digital materials in coordination with the IT.

  
• Promote the digitization and preservation programs to faculty, library staff
and other stakeholders.

  
  
• Participate in Library Technology Services' general planning and policy
development in support of the Library's strategic directions.

  
• Attend various Library, Institute, Faculty and University wide committees
and represent the Library on these or external committees as required.

  
• Ensure compliance with staff conduct and occupational health and safety
requirements.

  
  
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

  
The Digitization & Preservation Librarian reports to the Senior Director
Digital Initiatives.

  
SELECTION CRITERIA

1. ALA-accredited master's degree in library or information science.

2. 3 to 5 years of experience in creating, organizing, and managing digital
collections in an academic library setting.

3. Demonstrated ability to conceptualize, define and manage multiple large,
complex technology projects.

4. Knowledge of current technologies, standards and practices in digitization
and in preservation of digital collections, including knowledge of contingency
plans against threats to the digital collections such as industry changes to
file formats, natural disaster and security breaches.

5. Demonstrated knowledge of intellectual property issues as it relates to
digital assets.

  
6. Experience using and supporting numerous types of digital imaging equipment
including flatbed scanners and digital cameras.

  
7. Experience in using objective and subjective quality control assessments.

8. Demonstrated experience in supervising staff and developing
workflows.

  
9. Experience in articulating vision and goals and developing services to
clients.

  
10. Creative and analytical thinking skills and good problem solving ability.

  
11. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Working
knowledge of French.

  
12. High level of professionalism and commitment to the organization and its
mission and the ability to work flexibly in a changing environment.

  
13. Proven ability to promote the Library and its services to clients and
present a positive image of the library to clients.

  
14. Ability to understand and respond to priorities and trends in the Library
and University environments.

  
15. Commitment to professional issues, demonstrated through strong interest in
local, national or international committee work, research, publishing, etc.

  
16. Knowledge of equity principles, University occupational health and safety
policies and Act Respecting Occupational Health and Safety requirements for
work areas.

Gerer les collections numeriques et collaborer avec la communaute du campus
dans le cadre de projets de numerisation et de preservation des documents de
l'Universite et des collections specialisees et en circulation de la
bibliotheque. Piloter l'elaboration et la mise en oeuvre des projets
numeriques. Fournir des conseils sur l'acquisition de documents de
bibliotheque en format numerique.

  
Les taches et responsabilites comprennent notamment ce qui suit :

  
• Gerer les operations quotidiennes et superviser le personnel de l'equipe
chargee des projets de numerisation et de preservation.
Recevoir les demandes et evaluer les exigences. Formuler des recommandations
sur les methodes de saisie appropriees.

  
• Planifier, organiser et diriger les activites et suivre le rendement du
personnel. Former le personnel et les autres parties prenantes.

  
• Communiquer avec les vendeurs sur les questions de materiel, de logiciels et
de numerisation des formats speciaux.

  
• Preparer et documenter des processus efficaces de numerisation pour appuyer
la creation d'objets numeriques conformes aux normes des bibliotheques
numeriques.

• Élaborer des politiques, des directives et des normes de preservation
numerique.

• Analyser les collections numeriques, les archives de l'Universite et les
demandes de prets interbibliotheques dans le but d'identifier et de planifier
les initiatives de preservation. Encadrer les projets de
preservation numerique.

• Participer a la preparation des documents pour les activites de levee de
fonds, de developpement ou de rayonnement communautaires.

• Travailler en etroite collaboration avec les membres du personnel, les
archivistes, les conservateurs et le personnel charge des collections afin
d'integrer les exigences en matiere de politique numerique aux procedures et
politiques organisationnelles.

• Rechercher, evaluer, definir les specifications et deployer les technologies
necessaires aux projets de numerisation perennes qui soient en phase avec les
besoins de la bibliotheque en matiere de gestion, d'acces et de preservation.

• Collaborer avec les TI en vue de l'elaboration d'une strategie de migration
globale permettant de reformater et ou de rafraichir regulierement les
documents numeriques standards, non-standards ou perimes.

• Élaborer et tenir a jour un document de politique et de planification des
dispositifs de recuperation des documents numeriques en cas de sinistre, en
collaboration avec les TI.

• Promouvoir les programmes de numerisation et de preservation aupres des
professeurs, du personnel de la bibliotheque et des autres parties
prenantes.

• Participer a la planification generale et a l'elaboration des politiques du
Service des technologies documentaires destinees a appuyer les orientations
strategiques de la bibliotheque.

• Assister aux activites des differents comites de la bibliotheque, des
instituts, des facultes et de l'Universite et representer la bibliotheque au
sein de ces comites et de comites externes, selon les
besoins.

• Veiller a ce que le personnel respecte les reglements en matiere de sante et
de securite au travail.

numerisation et de preservation des collections numeriques, y compris des
plans d'intervention en cas de menaces, telles que les changements de formats

5. Connaissance confirmee des questions de propriete intellectuelle
applicables aux actifs numeriques.

6. Experience de l'utilisation et de l'entretien de differents types
d'equipements d'imagerie numerique comme numeriseurs a plat et des appareils
photo numeriques.

7. Experience des evaluations objectives et subjectives de
la qualite.

8. Competences en matiere d'encadrement du personnel et de coordination de
l'organisation du travail.

9. Experience de l'elaboration de vision et d'objectifs et de la creation de
