The Syracuse University Library seeks an energetic and visionary librarian who
is passionate about the challenges of digital scholarly communication. This
librarian will have a deep knowledge of the scholarly process and an avid
interest in the future of digital research. A main assignment will be to
direct SUrface, the university's new institutional repository/research
database at http://surface.syr.edu, with the goal of building it into a model,
state-of-the-art online resource. The scholarly communication librarian will
develop an understanding of the theory, principles, and evolving practice of
scholarly communication in the academy in order to make available, facilitate,
and extend the broadest access to resources needed by the Syracuse University
community for teaching and learning. This position will bridge the gap between
the library and the SU research community by advising, instructing, and
advocating for best practices in open access, and digital resources and
preservation. This position is part of the library's Unit for Research,
Collections, and Scholarly Communication (RCSC), and will work closely with
the associate dean to communicate with faculty and graduate students.

  
Qualifications:

MLS (ALA-accredited) or equivalent Master's degree in Archives or Information
Studies

4 years of experience with computer-based library technologies or with library
digital initiatives

  
2 years of experience working with faculty and other scholars to deepen
understanding of the research process

  
2 years of experience working with metadata schema, open access principles,
and the Open Archives Initiative

  
2 years of experience with digital collections and with digital preservation
issues

  
2 years of experience working with institutional repository issues and
software requirements

  
2 years of experience with open source digital repository platforms and with
XHTML, XML, XSLT, CSS

  
Job Specific Qualifications:

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as well as excellent public
speaker

  
Commitment to providing responsible and innovative services to a
culturally/racially diverse campus

  
Ability to work cooperatively in a demanding and rapidly changing environment

  
Ability to work effectively in a collegial, multi-disciplinary team
environment to explore and promote the application of new technologies

  
Responsibilities:

Direct SUrface: a multi-media research database and institutional repository;
work with SUrface team to ensure rapid development of this resource

  
Work with schools, departments, faculty, and graduate students to select and
submit appropriate materials for inclusion into SUrface and/or for digital
preservation Serve as an advocate and spokesperson for SUrface, open access,
and the importance of digital preservation to the campus, while addressing the
full spectrum of stakeholders to build a broad culture of engagement within
the university

  
Communicate effectively and frequently with the campus community about
SUrface, especially regarding the importance of open access, research
visibility, and digital preservation, through presentations, meetings, written
communications, reports, web pages, etc.

  
Participate in RCSC unit meetings, activities, and projects

  
Engage in the academic life of the University through committee service,
taking courses, giving presentations, attending lectures, reading professional
literature, etc.

  
Communicate research, expertise, and lessons learned through formal or
informal publications and presentations

  
Attend (online or in-person) and participate in regional and national
conferences

  
Report new trends, ideas, and other items of interest learned through
attendance of conferences, workshops, or other professional development
activities

  
Other duties as assigned
