**Job description**
The future of the KB is digital. We collect everything published in and about
the Netherlands. But that is not enough: we are working on digitizing our
entire collection to give more and more people improved access by digital
means. To realize this, we wish to cooperate with public and private partners
in and outside the Netherlands.
For our collections we focus on storage, safeguarding for the future, making
them searchable and unlocking their potential. In addition we are carrying out
research activities, because there are no obvious answers to many of our
questions.
We are looking for a research programmer for our (research) projects in the
areas of digitization and accessibility. You will contribute to these projects
with your knowledge of and experience with Java web application development
with Maven/Ant, Unix/Linux bash, but also with the development of web services
using common frameworks for SOAP/REST. You will be working on Named Entity
recognition for different languages and on testing and implementing various
software tools. You will also maintain and further develop the interoperable
service platform for digitization. The projects you will work on are Europeana
Newspapers and Succeed.
**Requirements**
Professional and intellectual capacities at the academic or higher
professional education level
Experience with
- Java web application development with Ant and Maven
- Processing of XML using XSLT and XPATH
- Developing web services using common frameworks for SOAP/REST
- Apache/Tomcat administration
- Familiarity with a common scripting language
- Familiarity with scientific workflow software (Taverna) is an extra
Familiarity with the digitization workflow of a library, archive or museum is
an extra
Excellent knowledge of (technical) English in reading and writing
Willingness to travel
Strong analytical and communicative skills
Independent, but also a teamplayer
**Conditions of employment**
This is a temporary contract with an initial duration of one year. This
position has been set at scale 10, with a maximum monthly gross salary of €
3.804,00 on a fulltime basis (40 hours a week). The company culture of the KB
is characterised by flexibility: within certain limits you have the freedom to
determine your own working hours. Furthermore you will have 42 days holiday
per year and an annual bonus of 8,33% plus very good fringe benefits.

The KB is the national library of the Netherlands
The KB is the national library of the Netherlands and was founded in 1798. The
KB collects everything published in and about the Netherlands. As a national
library, the KB has an exemplary position: it was the first library with a
digital storage system, and one of the first organisations internationally to
work in the digital preservation field. In the coming four years, the KB will
work intensively to realise a digital library that will offer everyone access
to all digital and printed publications that appear in the Netherlands. The
library plans digitize all books, newspapers and periodicals which have been
printed in the Netherlands since 1470. To achieve this goal the KB cooperates
with other parties: Google is for example digitizing
copyright free books from 1700 to around 1870.

You will work for the Research department of the Innovation & Development
sector. The Research department offers expertise and develops new solutions,
services and technology for the digital library of the future in
(inter)national R&D projects.
