POSITION: Assistant University Librarian for Technology Services

  
DEPARTMENT: Systems

  
PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

  
The University of Georgia Libraries seeks a forward-thinking, results-oriented
leader for the position of Assistant University Librarian (AUL) for Technology
Services to help refine and implement the information technology vision of the
UGA Libraries and the statewide GALILEO virtual library. The AUL serves as a
part of the senior library management team. Reporting to the University
Librarian and Associate Provost, the AUL administers and coordinates IT
support services for the University of Georgia Libraries. The AUL also
supervises the staff at the UGA Libraries who support GALILEO (Georgia's
statewide virtual library) and GIL (the University System of Georgia's (USG)
library management system) and coordinates their activities with the Executive
Director for Library Services of the Board of Regents (BOR), USG. The AUL
represents the UGA Libraries with campus Enterprise Information Technology
Services (EITS), BOR Library Services, technology vendors, and at state and
national library arenas focused on technology.

  
The AUL provides leadership to a staff of 19 IT professionals and one
technical librarian who work in the Systems Department's three units: The
Library Technology Support Group, GIL Liaison and Systems Librarian, and
GALILEO/GIL Technical Support Services. These units support the UGA Libraries'
network infrastructure, staff and public computer equipment and software,
databases and applications, web site, online catalog, EBSCO Discovery Service
and UGA scholarly repository, as well as the Digital Library of Georgia
collaborative digitization program, GALILEO, GIL and other resources. Staff
are focused on planning, developing, installing, supporting, and enhancing
computer-based application systems as well as equipment and software that
provide information to support teaching, learning, and research at the UGA
Libraries (and in some cases across the University System and state).

  
The UGA Libraries is located on the University of Georgia's main campus in
Athens, Georgia. Its facilities include the Main Library, Science Library,
Zell B. Miller Learning Center, Richard B. Russell Special Collections
Libraries, and Repository. The University of Georgia, established by the
Georgia General Assembly on January 27, 1785, is America's first state-
chartered university and the birthplace of the American system of public
higher education. UGA has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of
the top 25 public universities in America for last 10 years. The university's
main campus in Athens, Georgia, covers 605 acres and includes 313 buildings.

  
Perennially rated as one of the nation's top college towns, Athens offers a
vibrant place to work and live. With Atlanta 70 miles to the west, Athens
offers good proximity to the city while maintaining a small-town culture and
feel. The favorable climate supports an eco-friendly campus, and UGA is
currently undergoing a major multi-step plan to convert much of the campus
into pedestrian friendly green space.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  
Serves in a senior administrative capacity for the UGA Libraries, working
under the University Librarian and with the Deputy University Librarian,
Director of Library Administrative Services, department heads, and others on
strategic planning, budget, policy development, communication, and assessment
in support of the UGA Libraries' mission.

  
Crafts the overall direction and resulting priorities, goals, and objectives
for technology services in consultation with senior library leadership, UGA
campus IT personnel, Board of Regents personnel, and other stakeholders.

  
Participates in the development of the UGA Libraries online presence and the
electronic services that the UGA Libraries provide in concert with library
faculty.

  
Establishes and maintains effective partnerships, particularly within the UGA
community, Board of Regents, and the GALILEO community.

  
Participates in Board of Regents (BOR) planning, change review, and priority
setting processes for the GALILEO statewide initiatives. Coordinates planning
as needed with the Executive Director for Library Services of the Board of
Regents, the Head of GALILEO/GIL Technical Support Services, and the Director
of the Digital Library of Georgia.

  
Coordinates and oversees the efforts of the UGA Libraries' three technology
support units (Library Technology Support Group, GIL Liaison and Systems
Librarian, and GALILEO/GIL Technical Support Services). Assists with planning
/ organization/ priority definition, provides consultation, and monitors
outcomes for these areas.

  
Develops and maintains a competent and productive staff by overseeing and
mentoring the supervision and training in the Department, providing oversight
for all personnel actions in the Department, and providing opportunities for
educational and experiential growth of Departmental staff.

  
Supports staff use of critical campus central computing resources (UGAmail,
Campus Calendar, Kronos, etc.) by monitoring functionality, assisting with
staff problem reports, and providing feedback to EITS and other campus
resource support groups as needed; monitors and coordinates data security
issues.

  
Maintains professional knowledge of technology trends and cultivates an
understanding of the strategic role of information technology within academic
libraries.

  
Promotes communication within the Department and the UGA Libraries by
encouraging and actively engaging in the exchange of needed information.
Promotes effective communication between the UGA Libraries, BOR Library
Services, and the GALILEO/GIL community.

  
Provides needed information by managing and encouraging the maintenance of
documentation, relevant records, inventories, and support contracts.

  
Represents the UGA Libraries' IT activities and interests to UGA EITS, to the
university community, and to the library profession.

  
  
QUALIFICATIONS:

  
Required Qualifications:

ALA-accredited MLS; Minimum of 5 years' significant and progressively
responsible management experience in an academic library in a technical
setting; Experience supervising high-level technical personnel and library
staff; Experience establishing unit priorities and directing technical
projects and support services; Knowledge of a wide range of library and
information technology resources and services; Substantial knowledge and
experience with at least one integrated library system (ILS); Considerable
knowledge of trends, issues, and technology services in academic libraries;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working and collaborative
relationships; Effective oral and written communication skills; Ability to
adapt to a rapidly changing environment.

  
Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in several areas of library operations preferred; Experience with
Open URL resolver systems, Institutional Repositories (IR), and/or digital
library systems preferred; Technology experience in a large research library
preferred; Experience with web development preferred

  
SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary will be competitive and commensurate with the
successful candidate's experience and professional achievements. UGA
librarians are non-tenured faculty members. UGA offers an attractive benefits

tuition remission and paid relocation, 21 days annual leave, 12 days sick
leave, and 12 paid holidays.
