The Discovery Metadata Librarian is responsible for the accessioning of
digital objects into the Stanford Digital Repository (SDR). Stanford
University Libraries' (SUL) SDR manages hundreds of terabytes of assets and
the successful, automated ingestion of digital objects and their metadata will
be key to its success. The objects ingested may come from many sources, from
digital library collections to Google-scanned books and the metadata for the
collections will need to be examined with an eye both to schema and successful
discovery in SUL's discovery environment, SearchWorks.

  
Reporting to the Database Manager within the Metadata Department, the
successful candidate will ensure the timely flow of objects and their metadata
into the SDR through the collaborative use of the principles and practices of
both the Digital Library Systems and Services Department (DLSS) and the
Metadata Department. Coordination with principles for the loading of bulk
metadata into the Sirsi/DYNIX ILS, Symphony, will also be essential.

  
This is a four-year, fixed-term position. It is double posted at the 3P3 and
3P4 levels.

  
Duties:

  
The primary duty of the Discovery Metadata Librarian is the accessioning of
digital objects and their associated metadata into the SDR. This includes the
analysis of metadata supplied by publishers and indexing services for a
variety for formats (supplemental, article-level, image, audio, etc.) with
regards to quality and completeness. The Discovery Metadata Librarian will
assist in the specification of policies and schemas for ingestion and be
responsible for the transformation of accessioned objects and their metadata
to match these standards including, if necessary, remediation. The
accessioning of SUL's Google-scanned books will be a key focus. The Discovery
Metadata Librarian will contribute to the definition and documentation of the
accessioning process and formation of metadata policies for effective
discovery. Of key consideration will be the coordination of metadata across
all digital and print collections to harmonize conflicts and inconsistencies
so that they can function effectively in a unified discovery environment.

  
Qualifications:

  
Minimum Qualifications:

  
Demonstrated understanding of the theory and structure of library-related
discovery metadata

  
Familiarity with traditional cataloging practice and rules such as AACR2 and
RDA

  
Familiarity with non-bibliographic metadata standards, such as technical,
preservation, structural, packaging and transfer metadata schemes

  
Knowledge and experience with MODS, EAD or similar metadata standards

  
Familiarity with XML, RDF and other machine-actionable metadata languages

  
Demonstrated ability to use online and PC-based applications for data analysis
and reporting

  
Demonstrated ability to use or proven ability to learn basic tools, such as
XSLT or scripting to transform or remediate metadata

  
Excellent analytical and problem solving skills combined with attention to
detail for complex, detail-oriented work

  
Excellent oral and written communication skills

  
Ability to work independently, as a team member, and across organizational
boundaries in a highly demanding environment

  
Flexibility to be organized, productive and effective in a dynamic
environment, involved with a variety of simultaneous projects

  
Preferred Qualifications:

  
MLS or equivalent in knowledge and expertise

  
Broad knowledge of library repository functions, services, and requirements

  
Experience with metadata transformations and cross-walking tools

  
Familiarity with Stanford University Libraries and its Digital Library
environment
