The University of Mary Washington is seeking an energetic, innovative person
to serve as the Assistant Systems Librarian. The person in this position is
responsible for maintaining the UMW Libraries web site (
http://libraries.umw.edu) and associated web-based applications, including
LibGuides and Chamo, the public interface with our Virtua ILS.

The Assistant Systems Librarian works collaboratively with other library staff
and with the University's Director of Digital Communications and the
University Webmaster to maintain Library branding across its web presence and
to support other marketing efforts, and to develop and deliver relevant web
resources and services.

Under the supervision of the Systems Librarian, this librarian provides
technical support for new library initiatives and to maintain existing library
systems. Among the initiatives we anticipate undertaking in the coming years
are the migration to a next-generation library system with a discovery layer
and the full implementation of the University's digital repository. With the
assistance of at least on student assistant, the Systems Librarian and the
Assistant Systems Librarian provide the initial desktop support on the
Fredericksburg campus, and the two librarians work closely with the
Information Technologies department to maintain all library equipment and
services.

In addition, this librarian serves on the reference desk, including occasional
Saturday duty. The librarian serves on library and campus committees and
participates in the libraries' planning and assessment processes.

The UMW Libraries constitute the knowledge center of the university -- a
physical and virtual manifestation of the institution's mission of connected,
integrated, and engaged teaching, learning, research, and service. The UMW
Libraries are committed to supporting the University's mission of creating an
environment where students, faculty, and staff share in the creation and
exploration of knowledge in the development of their academic and professional
interests and in practicing the habits of mind necessary for life-long
learning.

Required qualifications:

  * Master's degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited Master's program (MLS/MLIS).
  * Working knowledge of the principles and practices of web design and development.
  * Experience with standard web programming languages such as XHTML, PHP, CSS, JavaScript or SQL
  * Excellent communication skills, including written communication.
  * Experience with various operating systems including Windows and Unix and their related web technologies.
Preferred qualifications:

  * Experience developing for both desktop and mobile web platforms and knowledge of responsive design practices.
  * Experience with digital repositories.
The University of Mary Washington accepts only completed online applications.
Faxed, mailed, or emailed applications will not be considered. Employment
offers are contingent upon the successful completion of criminal background
checks. If accommodations are requested either before or at the time of the
interview, contact the AA/EEO Officer in Human Resources at 540/654-1211.

The University of Mary Washington is a public arts and sciences institution in
Fredericksburg, Va., that attracts intellectually curious undergraduate and
graduate students in search of rigorous academics. With a total enrollment of
nearly 5,000 students, UMW offers a supportive campus community that values
and instills honor and integrity. Moreover, the university located midway
between Richmond, Va., and Washington, D.C. provides a rich array of research,
internship, leadership, and recreational opportunities that not only train
students for the real world but allow them to interact closely with faculty
members.

In addition to its primary location in the heart of historic Fredericksburg,
UMW has two other campuses, one in Stafford, which caters to working
professionals, and another in Dahlgren, which offers graduate science and
engineering programs. There are three colleges: arts and sciences, business,
and education all of which produce graduates who are critical thinkers
prepared to succeed. UMW also recently developed a Center for Economic
Development, which connects faculty and students with regional initiatives and
businesses seeking their assistance.

In recent years, the University of Mary Washington has seen its academic
reputation garner national recognition in numerous selective guidebooks,
including Forbes, the Fiske Guide to Colleges and the Princeton Review's
edition of The Best 376 Colleges. The university also has been recognized in
Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine, U.S. News & World Report, Peterson's
Competitive Colleges and Barron's Profiles of American Colleges.
