The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks an innovative and
knowledgeable librarian to serve in the position of Special Formats and
Metadata Cataloger. The Special Formats and Metadata Cataloger reports to the
head of Special Formats & Metadata with a dotted-line relationship to the head
of Digital Repository Services. MARC cataloging is done using OCLC's Connexion
Client and the Library's Innovative Interfaces local system; catalogers at the
UNC Libraries contribute national-level cataloging through NACO, BIBCO and
other PCC programs. The cataloger will also work with developers of the
Library's digital repository to develop metadata, crosswalks, and standards
for XML-based metadata and will work collaboratively with technical services
staff in both the general and special collections.
The Special Formats and Metadata Cataloger is responsible for and maintains an
understanding of issues involved in the cataloging of geospatial data,
statistical datasets, cartographic resources, locally produced research data,
and other data resources as needs arise. The Cataloger contributes to the
professional dialogue to improve service and enhance access to library
resources and contributes authority records to the national authority files.
The Cataloger also helps support the growing workload surrounding non-MARC
metadata in the Libraries, and researches metadata standards and best
practices as they apply in a variety of disciplines. The individual in this
position serves as a resource for staff in all campus libraries, advising on
appropriate strategies for creating and managing metadata for a wide variety
of digital media formats, including data sets, theses and dissertations,
unpublished scholarly work, raw research data, images, audio, and video. The
Cataloger participates in the design and development of tools and workflows to
support long-term preservation and access to digitized and born-digital
materials in the Carolina Digital Repository.
The Data Services section of Davis Library Research & Instructional Services
collects statistical and geospatial data sets that directly support the
research and classroom needs of UNC faculty, staff and students. The current
statistical data collection is heavily weighted toward the social sciences,
but patrons may request acquisitions in any subject area. The Library has a
large and growing geospatial data collection that is international and
interdisciplinary. Geospatial and other datasets are purchased from vendors,
received via the Federal Depository Library Program, and collected from state
and local data providers. The successful applicant will work closely with Data
Services librarians and other subject specialists to provide accurate
descriptions and correct holdings information for UNC's data resources.
The Carolina Digital Repository provides ingest, access, and preservation
services for digital library collections, University archives, and research
data created by members of the UNC community. The Cataloger works closely with
development staff in the Library & Information Technology Department and with
Library archivists to develop standards, create metadata, and transform
researcher-supplied data into appropriate formats to provide access to the
unique materials housed in the Carolina Digital Library.
