**Overview:**
The Rockefeller Archive Center (RAC) seeks a forward thinking and data savvy
metadata expert to join the RAC in the position of an Assistant Digital
Archivist. This
person will not only be intimately familiar with the principles of archival
description but
also have experience creating original description for a diverse range of
digital materials.
The candidate will provide expertise to support the analysis, selection, and
implementation of metadata schemas appropriate to the cataloging and discovery
platforms at the RAC. Reporting to the Assistant Director- Head of Digital
Programs, the
successful candidate will collaborate with archivists throughout the RAC,
providing
training and supervision as assigned.
The candidate will be expected to explore software tools and applications of
different
technologies for cataloging and metadata production and maintenance; identify,
implement, and test applications that will help automate or improve the
efficiency and
productivity of RAC's operations, especially those related to scanning and
digital
duplication; manage documentation and promote knowledge transfer and training
for
descriptive and digitization practices at the RAC; maintain knowledge of and
participate
in national and international developments in metadata standards, cataloging,
bibliographic and authority control; and participate in professional
development activities.
**Required minimum qualifications:**
• ALA accredited MLIS or Masters in Information Science or Archival Science.
• Familiarity with the Archivists' Toolkit.
• Experience managing scanning and digital digitization workflows.
• Knowledge of cataloging and metadata schema, including EAD, EAC-CPF,
Dublin Core, MODS, METS, PREMIS, MARCXML, TEI, RDA, and other
emerging data standards such as linked data and semantic web development
and technologies.
• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects while developing and
documenting workflows and meeting deadlines.
• Experience creating, reviewing, editing and bulk loading metadata or content
for
digital collections.
• Experience working independently and collaboratively.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of content description.
• Experience with XML editors and performing XSLT transformations.
• Aptitude for complex, analytical work with attention to detail.
• Demonstrated problem solving skills and flexibility.
• Excellent oral and written skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
**Preferred Qualifications:**
• Proficient computer skills and experience with various operating systems,
including Windows, Mac, Linux, or Unix.
• Two or more years of experience working in archival and library settings.
• Experience performing data migration and transformation between systems and
metadata standards, as well as converting analog description into structured
digital metadata.
• Experience providing training and metadata expertise to staff.
• Experience administering content discovery systems such as XTF and Omeka.
• Knowledge of database structure and SQL query languages.
• Knowledge of search platforms, including Apache Solr.
• Knowledge of and experience using scripting languages, such as Python, Java
and PHP.
