UWM Libraries seeks an energetic, knowledgeable, and technologically capable
individual to serve as a Data Services Librarian. This position supports the
campus need to address quickly evolving data management processes. The
successful candidate will play a leadership role creating a campus environment
for successful discovery, use, and management of locally and externally
available data especially in the areas of science and social science research.
Duties include providing assistance to researchers who need help developing a
data management plan, including data curation issues related to creation,
documentation, and metadata standards; developing and promoting an
understanding of the theory, principles, and evolving practice of scholarly
communication; and developing library services to support the data curation
needs of faculty, staff, and graduate researchers to meet the data management
and sharing requirements of various funding agencies. This position reports to
the Assistant Director of Libraries for User and Research Services

  
Job Summary/Basic Function:

Data management consultations:

  * Provide assistance to researchers who need developing a data management plan, including data curation issues related to creation, documentation, and metadata standards
  * Proactively work with the Library Contacts to develop relationships with prospective Digital Commons depositors to collect, manage, and facilitate access to data for secondary analysis
  * Help faculty, staff and students identify and access data sets for secondary research analysis
  * Communicate with faculty the best practices for flexible local and remote data storage of archival and working copies, including multiple levels of storage depending on formats and access requirements
Develop campus standards:

  * Survey campus researchers to determine primary data needs
  * Develop and promote an understanding of the theory, principles, and evolving practice of scholarly communication
  * Advise, instruct, and advocate for best practices in open access, and digital resources and preservation, of campus-generated data
  * Stay abreast of new learning in the area of best practices for data curation and make recommendations
  * Serve as primary contact to UWM Office of Assessment and Institutional Research
  * Serve as primary contact to UWM Graduate School research initiatives
Subject Specialization:

  * Identify and facilitate access to data sets and statistics within the UWM Libraries collections and from outside resources.
  * Create research guides
  * Identify, evaluate and recommend data set acquisitions
  * Develop library services to support the data curation needs of faculty, staff, and graduate researchers to meet the data management and sharing requirements of various funding agencies
  * Design and teach (non-credit) workshops on statistical and data resources for graduate students and faculty workshops
  * Write grants to federal, state and local agencies to support data services activities and initiatives. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:

  * Master's Degree in Library and Information Science, or the equivalent from an ALA-accredited program
  * Evidence of subject background and/or relevant experience in sciences, social sciences, or engineering
  * Evidence of experience with or knowledge of data management and curation
  * Demonstrated understanding of developments and trends in data services and tools
  * Evidence of excellent organizational, communication and presentation skills
Preferred Qualifications:

  * Advanced degree in sciences, social sciences, or engineering
  * Evidence of experience with geospatial data
  * Demonstrated understanding of metadata standards
  * Demonstrated proficiency with current statistical packages
  * Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively interact and work with diverse groups including colleagues, faculty and students in collaborative and team environments
