The Information Technology Specialist implements, maintains, supports, and
enhances a wide range of technologies and systems to provide innovative
library services and ensure access to the library's extensive range of online
information resources and digital collections. This position also supports
library staff and local and remote library users in the use of existing
information technology as well as the adoption of new and emerging technology.
Key Responsibility 1
Provide ongoing support for a variety of library systems, including the
integrated library system, archives management system, proxy server, link
resolver, interlibrary loan management system, and other web-based
applications.
Key Responsibility 2
Assist in management and support of the libraries' integrated library system,
currently ExLibris Voyager, including overall system administration and
desktop support .
Key Responsibility 3
Participate in the ongoing assessment and enhancement of existing technology
as well as new information technology and related services deployed.
Key Responsibility 4
Provide assistance with server support and routine system maintenance
including performing scheduled backups, applying Linux and Windows server
updates, and assisting with monitoring overall system performance. Oversee
library wide software installations and configuration.
Key Responsibility 5
Delegate tasks and project assignments to library technology student
assistants and monitor the resolution of all support issues. Research,
recommend, and expedite equipment and software purchases.
Key Responsibility 6
Pursue ongoing professional development and contribute to the profession
through local and national professional and scholarly activities.
Other duties as assigned.
Communications:
Communicate with library staff on technology-related issues. Provide regular
updates on the status of ongoing projects and resolution of technology issues.
Assist faculty, staff, and students in resolving issues related to access to
library technology and remotely accessible resources. Communicate with the
Office of Technology Services on campus wide issues impacting library
technology.
Customer Service:
Address desktop support issues submitted by library staff as well as IIT
faculty, staff, and students in a prompt, efficient, and responsive manner.
Education & Experience:
Master's degree preferred, with a Master's in library and information science
from an ALA Accredited program desirable. Bachelor's degree in information
technology management, computer science, or relevant combination of education
and experience preferred.
A minimum of one year of directly relevant professional experience working
with information technology and/or library systems required with at least two
years of experience in desktop support and software installation and
maintenance preferred.
Experience providing support in an academic library environment preferred.
Experience supporting and maintaining library automated systems, institutional
repositories, and archival management systems including but not limited to
such systems as Voyager, ILLiad, and Dspace desirable.
Preferred Skills:
Knowledge of library, communication, and web standards such as MARC, OpenURL
and link resolvers, proxy systems, and XML, as well as knowledge of relational
database systems and applications including SQL and MS Access required.
Skill in the support of Windows and Mac OSX computers and the maintenance of
Windows and Linux servers preferred.
Knowledge of Drupal, Dspace, and other content systems, and familiarity with
Microsoft Office products preferred.
Strong service orientation, excellent oral and written communication skills,
and excellent project management skills required.
