The J. Murrey Atkins Library at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte
is seeking a Research Assistant Professor /Digitization Project Librarian to
manage a grant-funded scholarly digitization project, Living Charlotte: The
Postwar Development of a New South City. In partnership with the Charlotte
Mecklenburg Library's Carolina Room and Johnson C. Smith University's James B.
Duke Memorial Library, Atkins Library Special Collections will digitize
manuscript and archival materials that tell the story of the remarkable
economic growth and social transformation of the Charlotte, N.C., region in
the first four decades after World War II. The project is currently funded
through June 30, 2014, and will be requesting funding for at least one
additional year of work through June 30, 2015.
The Digitization Project Librarian will research, adapt, and contribute to
professional best practices in the digitization of cultural heritage
collections for humanities scholarship; provide expertise and decision-making
in the design and implementation of new and emerging digital imaging, digital
audio reformatting, and metadata standards; provide oversight and training;
develop workflows; lead in the coordination of activities with UNCC faculty
and community project partners; identify budgetary needs and draft budget
revisions; participate in grant writing and reporting; hire and supervise
project staff. The position will report to the Digital Programs Archivist at
Atkins Library.
**REQUIRED**
* Master's degree in Library and Information Science or related discipline with coursework or experience in archival theory and practice, special collections librarianship, digitization of cultural heritage materials, and/or digital preservation.
**ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES**
* Oversee humanities digitization project
* Collaborate with other library faculty on the design of the project to ensure it serves the research,teaching, and service mission of a research university
* Lead in the implementation of systems, procedures, processes, workflows, and benchmarks to ensure project deliverables and deadlines are met
* Serve as a liaison to teaching and research faculty on campus, coordinating activities in the realms of resource selection and placing the digitized materials in a scholarly context
* Coordinate tasks among community partners, project staff, and departmental staff
* Conduct copyright analysis, applying the concepts of fair use to the digitization of manuscripts in the context of a scholarly research environment
* Hire, train and manage a team of graduate and undergraduate students; train project staff
* Design and implement project assessment activities
* Develop project progress reports, budget revisions, and other project documentation

* Full-time - contract funded through June 30, 2014 (contract renewal is dependent on renewed Grant funding)
