POSITION DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Digital Projects Coordinator
SUMMARY: The Digital Projects Coordinator enables success among the nine
partner university libraries in the Washington Research Library Consortium
(WRLC) through the creation of digital collections. The Digital Projects
Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and guiding the digitization of
the extraordinary collections available among the partners in the WRLC. This
position will build a sustainable infrastructure which facilitates sharing
across the consortium and with other organizations. This position will work
collaboratively with the WRLC Digital Practices Committee (DPC) to establish
requirements and standards, provide expert guidance, interface with metadata
and technology staff, coordinate the work of digitization service providers,
and manage final processing and quality control. Reports to the Director of
Information Services.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. With the Digital Practices Committee (DPC), oversee requirements for
digital reformatting, storage, preservation, and processes associated with
creating digital content from the collections within the WRLC. Establish
requirements and standards conforming to best practices and evaluate and
recommend the acquisition of resources to further the mission of creating
digital collections for the WRLC.
2. Develop efficient workflows for digitization of a variety of
media. Plan and coordinate digitization projects in
collaboration with reformatting and technology staff and metadata librarians
from partner libraries. Provide guidance for assessing conservation needs and
restrictions, examining copyright status, and developing selection criteria.
Determine the best options for hardware and software. Ensure quality control
of reformatted materials and metadata. Oversee transfer of digitized materials
to the shared digital repository. Coordinate use of WRLC owned equipment for
digitization projects. Provide administrative support.
3. Coordinate and collaborate closely with consortial partners, the Digital
Practices Committee and with the WRLC management and staff. Work at the
partner university libraries, as necessary, to oversee and ensure the success
of the digitization program.
4. Promote the WRLC shared digital collection through successful dissemination
strategies, project reporting and presentations. Provide opportunities for
digitization training and education within the WRLC. Participate in
professional activities to raise awareness of the WRLC digital collections.
Actively seek grants and funding to further WRLC's digitization program.
Coordinate consortial grants for digital projects among the partner
institutions.
5. Serve on committees and task forces as required. Provide constructive input
for enhancements to services or revisions to policies and procedures. Serve as
backup to other positions as necessary. Undertake special projects and perform
other duties as assigned. Seek new knowledge and update skills to enhance
performance in all areas of responsibility.
QUALIFICATIONS
EXPECTED: ALA accredited master's degree in library or information science or
masters degree in related field. Three years experience managing and
supervising digital projects in an academic environment. Demonstrated
knowledge of digitization best practices; life cycle management of digital
assets; and metadata schema (such as Dublin Core, METS, EAD, MARCXML) and
controlled vocabularies/descriptive standards. Documented experience with the
hardware and software required to create, store, organize, and deliver digital
content in multiple digital image, text, audio, and video formats. Knowledge
of rights management, digitizing and OCR technologies and techniques.
Awareness of current trends in libraries, archives, and digitization.
Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills. Strong
organizational and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated ability to work
collaboratively and to successfully manage multiple projects and priorities.
PREFERRED: Knowledge of DSpace, Omeka; workflow software (Northwestern Books
Workflow, ProcessMaker); metadata standards such as MODS, Premis, RightsMD;
machine-created metadata (ALTO, MIX) and BagIt transfer protocol. Familiarity
with relevant aspects of copyright law. Experience providing training and
professional development, aligned with established best practices. Experience
working with digitization vendors.
