Suffolk University is seeking an innovative individual to join the Moakley
Archive and Institute staff as Assistant Archivist. This position will work
with a variety of campus stakeholders to provide reference services and
coordinate the department's digital initiatives.
The incumbent will provide research assistance, conduct in-class instruction
in archival research methods, and manage the reading room. The incumbent will
also develop policies and workflow to appraise, collect, manage, preserve and
make available digital materials held by the University. The individual will
engage with emerging research and professional developments relevant to the
curation of digital materials and collaborate with the University Records
Manager and technology units to develop and sustain a program for stewardship
of hybrid and born-digital material.
Requirements:
* Master's degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited library school. Formal training in archival theory and practice. In selected instances, a post-graduate degree in a related discipline may be substituted for an MLS.
* Two to four years post-degree, full-time experience working in an academic archives setting, including experience processing collections, providing reference services, and supervision of staff.
* Preference given to candidates with experience implementing policies, standards, and procedures for stewardship of digital material in a special collections setting. Knowledge of and experience with software and applications related to: digital access management; institutional repositories; archival collection management software.
* Experience with implementing strategies and technology developed or adopted by the archival community for processing and curating born-digital born archival material. Familiarity with EAD, DACS, Dublin Core, MODS, METS, XML, PREMIS & other data structure standards relevant to archival control of digital collections, as well as markup and style sheet languages; knowledge of file formats used for preserving digital information.
* Excellent communication and organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail.
* Excellent interpersonal skills, patience, diplomacy, and demonstrated ability to think creatively, and work both independently and collaboratively in a production-oriented, collegial environment with diverse user communities.
* Knowledge of electronic records management issues.
* Familiarity with legal issues governing university records regarding copyright and rights management.
