The University of Maryland Libraries is seeking a Metadata Librarian. Under
the direction of the Head of Metadata Services, the Metadata Librarian
implements and supports metadata strategies associated with digital
initiatives and projects. The incumbent may lead projects or serve as a member
of a project team, providing metadata expertise. The
Metadata Librarian collaborates with colleagues in Digital Systems and
Stewardship and Special Collections and University Archives to evaluate the
effectiveness of metadata for resource discovery and access. The incumbent
recommends metadata schemas and develops workflows for metadata creation for
collections to be digitized. Designs and provides documentation, training and
consultation on creation and application of metadata to faculty and staff
within Metadata Services and throughout the UMD Libraries.
Manages a broad variety of tasks in response to shifting priorities and
changing constraints. Contributes to national programs and
initiatives such as the Program for Cooperative Cataloging.
Participates in planning, establishing and achieving the goals and objectives
of the Metadata Services Department as a whole. As a member of the Library
faculty, has an obligation to remain professionally informed, to pursue the
discovery of new knowledge related to the field of expertise, to disseminate
the results of scholarly work, and to seek opportunities for professional
service at the Libraries, campus, consortium, state, and national levels.
Required Qualifications
* Master's degree in library science from a graduate program accredited by the American Library Association.
* Minimum of two years of experience related to metadata in an academic, research, special collections library, or institution with a substantial digital collection.
* Demonstrated experience with MARC or non-MARC metadata in a library environment.
* Demonstrated experience with XML-based standards such as Dublin Core, EAD, VRA Core, MODS, METS, and PREMIS.
* Knowledge of current standards, such as AACR2, RDA, DACS, LC classification, LCSH, FRBR/FRAD.
* Working knowledge of cataloging utilities, such as OCLC Connexion, local integrated library systems, or digital repository systems/software (Fedora, DSpace, etc.).
* Knowledge of semantic web, RDF, and linked data.
* Understanding of technical services operations and emerging cataloging issues and trends in digital resource management.
* Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a congenial team environment and to interact effectively with a broad variety of staff within and outside of Technical Services.
* Ability to meet standards for achieving permanent status.
Preferred Qualifications
* Demonstrated experience with DTD or XSLT.
* Familiarity with archival practices and digitization workflows.
* Experience with Library of Congress cataloging practices and procedures and with PCC programs.
* Knowledge of a foreign language.
