Preservation Project Manager- deadline to apply March 29

San Francisco, CA

Help manage the unique audio and video projects that are preserved and
digitized by a Bay Area arts and media institution while helping to build the
field of moving image and audio preservation and distribution. Work preserved
at BAVC comes from some of the country's most important independent media
artists and cultural archives. If you are collaborative, understand moving
image and/or audio preservation, have a strong project management background,
and believe in power of to make social change, BAVC is
looking for you.

  
JOB SUMMARY

The role of the Preservation Project Manager is to coordinate BAVC's
preservation activities, oversee the timelines and workflows of fee-for-
service client projects as well as deliverables of grant-funded projects. The
Preservation Project Manager is responsible for the supervision of on-call
technicians, and works closely with the Director of Technology to ensure
BAVC's preservation services are of the highest quality.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Ensure that the department's practices are aligned with current standards and
industry practices in the field so that the department can properly and
swiftly address client needs

  
Develop and periodically re-assess workflows and train Preservation
Technicians on said workflow, as needed.

Update BAVC's internal Salesforce instance with project documentation .

Provide training to and and oversight of digitizing technicians and student
fellows to be sure projects are completed on time and within budget.

Manage and track preservation projects -- both fee-for-service and grant-
funded -- in order to meet client deadlines and manage internal resources.

Oversee a technician to be sure supplies are inventoried and supplies are
ordered in a timely manner.

Maintain relationships and build strategic partnerships with experts in the
field of preservation.

  
Travel and present on behalf of project and organization.

Maintain and clean equipment as needed, liaising with outside repair
technicians.

Manage preservation client relationships and develop new project leads in
conjunction with the Director of Technology .

  
Work closely with technicians and clients to ensure proper project
documentation and meta data.

Perform supervised transfers and keep a log of errors with the legacy
elements, as well as any other metadata, are requested by the client.

Identify and differentiate between errors in legacy tapes and artifacts and
errors in digital transfer.

Answer client questions and perform supervised transfers with clients present.

Evaluate, clean and label legacy audio and videotapes, and preservation master
elements (at their various instantiations: masters, access copies, and so on).

  
  
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Graduation from a four-year college or university

Minimum of two years experience in a mission driven organization and/or higher
education environment

Demonstrable familiarity with the media preservation field

Strong project and people management skills

Proven project management experience

Experience setting up and managing deliverables and timelines for clients
and/or grant-funded projects

Experience overseeing documentation of technical projects

Understanding of development and implementation of project workflow and
quality controls

Understanding of budgets and budget management

Experience developing strategic partnerships or client relationships

Understanding of Salesforce or similar system for client relations

Understanding of standards and practices of analog & digital preservation

Experience producing/ managing technical metadata

Experience managing maintenance of video and computer hardware

Familiarity with Preservation standards (PREMIS, OAIS, PBCore), post
production workflows (FinalCut, Compressor, MPEG Streamclip) and FFmpeg, OSX,
Linux, Windows Server administration

Understanding of preservation of analog video and equipment, including format
identification, tape and hardware care and handling and cleaning, playback and
storage best practices.

Knowledge of the creation and implementation of metadata standards, controlled
vocabulary, and cataloging guidelines.

Ability to prepare and understand technical documentation

Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently

Strong attention to detail

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and to
establish/maintain effective working relationships with all segments of the
BAVC community

  
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

Familiarity with complex technical systems

Understanding of the independent and community media fields

Public presentation skills

Sales experience

Experience negotiating with vendors

Knowledge of Preservation funders and providers in the nonprofit space

BAVC is in full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and

Significant work is performed in a typical interior community meeting space or
classroom work environment, with typical noise and other disruption. Required
to lift, carry and transport technical and specialized equipment and handle
with appropriate caution.

Both standing and sitting are required for long periods of time. High use of
computers and related equipment is required.

Various types of equipment/supplies are used to accomplish the job
requirements and include, but are not limited to, video and editing equipment,
instruction supplies, computers, classroom materials, telephones and other
common communication devices.
