This is a split position, reporting 60% to the Metadata Management Unit within
the Catalog & Metadata Services Department (C&MS) and 40% to Library
Applications and Publishing (LAP) within the Library Systems Office (LSO).
Provides leadership in metadata analysis and management services for the
Library. Coordinates and works closely with the Head of Library Applications &
Publishing (LAP) and LAP staff to integrate and implement necessary
technological aspects of work. Using a broad set of metadata analysis tools,
processes, workflows, and methodologies, engages in metadata record analysis,
specification writing, transformation, quality assurance, loading services,
and data management. Resolves structural and content errors, omissions, and
ambiguities that may result in problems that affect access and broad aspects
of user comprehension.
Engages in post-ingest metadata cleanup services and projects as needed.
Serves as a member of the BadCat Catalog Maintenance team to ensure the
creation and management of quality metadata across Library information
systems. Coordinates metadata identification and review with relevant Library
stakeholders. Ensures high quality and timely metadata automation services.
Liaises with Library staff within and beyond C&MS and LAP to identify and plan
metadata service projects. This may include advising units on metadata issues
and workflows, participating in workflow analysis and optimization, and
identifying and advising project or unit leaders on best practices.
Required Qualifications
* Working knowledge of project management approaches, tools and phases of the project lifecycle, as well as managing resources, scope, and schedule
* Ability to participate in multiple concurrent projects in a given timeframe, monitor project workflow, provide regular reports or updates as necessary, and meet project deadlines
* Detailed understanding of MARC bibliographic standards, including specific fields and their function
* Experience mapping data from one metadata standard to another, or unformatted data to a specific metadata standard, such as MARC
* Experience with MARC editing tools, e.g., MarcEdit and basic familiarity with Linux
* Demonstrated ability to use or proven ability to learn basic and advanced tools such as XSLT or scripting, to transform or remediate metadata
* Knowledge of OCLC and integrated library systems, preferably Millennium
* Experience documenting procedures
* Ability to function effectively in an environment of competing priorities, balancing project work, urgent tasks, and ongoing maintenance
* Highly developed analytic and communication skills (both oral and written) including the ability to communicate technical issues in a clear and concise manner with both technical and non-technical staff and the ability to engage stakeholders up and down the line and support front line staff
* Must be: self-motivated, work independently or as part of a team, able to learn quickly, meet deadlines
* Excellent analytical and problem solving skills together with attention to detail for complex, possibly repetitive, detail-oriented work

* Experience with automation of manual tasks
* Experience creating or updating authority records
* Scripting experience
* Experience writing technical specifications
* Advanced knowledge of national cataloging standards and tools, especially: OCLC, Anglo American Cataloging Rules, RDA, and the MARC21 formats for both bibliographic and authority data
