Illinois Public Media (IPM) seeks a Director of Technology to manage technical
resources and ensure the technical viability of all broadcast, multimedia and
online platforms at WILL AM-FM-TV, the public broadcasting service of the
College of Media at the University of Illinois. The Director of Technology
provides technical vision and leadership, supervises the IPM technology team,
coordinates with the College's technology staff in managing academic broadcast
facilities and serves as the key contact for collaborative broadcast
technology projects with the College of Media and other partnerships.

  
Illinois Public Media is a not-for-profit public media service. Our mission is
to enrich people's lives through programs and services that educate,
entertain, inspire and empower by airing the best of public television and
radio programs, producing local content for TV, radio and the Web, while
working with community partners to address needs and concerns.

  
The University of Illinois is home to Nobel Laureates, MacArthur Fellows and
Pulitzer Prize winners. The university's library is one of the largest in the
world, and its Krannert Center is one of the nation's top performance venues.
Residents of Champaign-Urbana enjoy a thriving arts scene, an active night
life, Big Ten sports, museums, parks and a growing system of bicycle paths.

  
The Director of Technology at IPM:

  * is responsible for the IPM technology department's budget, technical project planning, maintenance, infrastructure expansion and technology forecasting.
  * is instrumental in researching and planning activities related to collaborative efforts of partnerships and signal expansion.
  * needs to be an active researcher, planner and project manager.
  * must be able to manage several projects at a time and react effectively in station emergency situations.
  * may consult, advise and serve on committees, guest lecture and direct cooperative efforts between the academic broadcast aspects of the College of Media.
  * may perform daily hands-on IT and engineering activities.
  * fulfills a defined leadership and management role for Illinois Public Media and requires a strong working knowledge of and experience in a wide range of broadcast engineering, IT, digital media and content technologies.
SALARY and BENEFITS: Salary commensurate with experience but not less than
$70,000. No relocation expenses provided. This is a full-time academic
professional position at the Urbana campus. The University of Illinois offers

Candidates must have a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, broadcast
engineering, information technology, computer networking, computer engineering
or a related technology field. Other required qualifications include:

  * Five years of relevant experience, three years of which must be in broadcast technology management and supervision.
  * Direct experience with virtualization, Microsoft endpoint and server architectures, Linux server architecture, UNIX systems and networking expertise.
  * Skill in installing, maintaining and operating studio, remote control and transmitting digital/analog equipment for radio/television.
  * Proven experience as a project manager with keen budgeting and research skills.
  * Proficient communication skills.
  * Experience managing and working cooperatively with diverse colleagues, clients and staff.
  * Knowledge of broadcast proprietary software such as: Enco DAD, Harris/Louth Automation, Protrack traffic, Triveni Guide Builder, Grass Valley switchers, Miranda switchers/terminal gear and Evertz terminal gear.
  * Working knowledge of FCC broadcast rules, regulations, and licensing requirements.
  * Extensive broadcast engineering and IT management experience with well-developed interpersonal skills and management abilities.
  * Experience in radio and television studio and transmitter operation and maintenance.
  * A solid background in digital theory and in the emerging computer technologies used in broadcasting and digital media. Experience with the ENCO DAD or similar audio technologies.
  * Familiarity with PBS distribution systems, PBS NRT, PBS V6, combined master control operations and NPR's Content Radio program distribution system.
  * Sensitivity to the professional look and sound of the broadcast product and the ability to communicate that awareness to all technical staff.
  * SBE certification preferred.
