Position Summary:
The Data Curator works in a team-based environment to implement and advance
the Libraries' data management services. Working as part of the Data Curation
Unit and collaborating with colleagues across the Libraries, the incumbent
will play a leading role in creating workflows, identifying, implementing, and
assessing the use of technologies that support qualitative and quantitative
data gathering, manipulation, transformation, visualization and analysis. They
will also advise on the development of infrastructure supporting a data
repository to maximize the exposure and reuse of research data sets at
Virginia Tech and lead efforts involving the transformation of metadata into
appropriate formats.
This position will be responsible for:
- Processing requests for archiving datasets in the digital repository; designing and implementing appropriate processing workflows.
- Selecting and managing technologies for transferring and transforming metadata to augment datasets and enable ingest into a repository.
- Developing, documenting, and executing policies and workflows relating to technical processes for actively managing the lifecycle of datasets within the library at Virginia Tech; developing processes for maintaining the integrity of and access to archived datasets.
- Leading data transformation and manipulation projects.
Required Qualifications:
Master's degree or Bachelor's degree and significant experience equivalent to
an advanced degree. Relevant experience in working with data and metadata for
the purposes of research. Demonstrated use of a scripting language such as
Python or Ruby. Demonstrated understanding of database systems. Demonstrated
experience in curating, handling, managing, or transforming large datasets.
Demonstrated time management and project completion skills. Excellent
analytical, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Ability to
work independently and collaboratively within a team-based environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with Geospatial Information Systems and Government Data. Knowledge
of federal agency public data policies with a demonstrated understanding of
requirements for long-term archiving. Experience using metadata standards for
digital preservation, XML, XQuery, and XSLT. Knowledge of issues and
developments in repository development. Experience with statistical modeling
and data visualization. Experience or interest in linked data and semantic web
technologies.
