Under the direction of the Assistant Director, Electronic Resources and
Serials (ER+S), the Electronic Access and Discovery Librarian will serve as
one of the leaders of the ER+S management team, and will play a critical role
in ER+S's mission to establish a proactive service culture to ensure faculty,
students and staff have expedited, accurate and relevant access to the broad
range of research materials provided through the University
Libraries.
The EDA Librarian will manage data residing in Penn's traditional ILS and in
all of the Libraries' content knowledgebases, including an openURL resolver
and discovery service. The incumbent will analyze, manage and organize
incoming data, using data-loading tools and batch-processes, and will manage,
prepare and facilitate the loading of e-resource record sets into the ILS.
Position holds responsibilities for performing original and advanced copy
cataloging and record maintenance on a variety of e-formats; integrating
resources (databases/websites), e-books and serials. The EDA librarian will
also collaborate with specialists for other formats, such as visual resource
or print materials, and resolve complex cataloging
problems.
The successful candidate will be able to work within and beyond the confines
of numerous knowledgebases (some home-grown) to manage large datasets and
analyze, manipulate and merge data from multiple sources. The successful
candidate will be responsible for organizing and analyzing problems and the
development of creative, flexible and resourceful solutions, will work both
independently and collaboratively, and will need to be able to take initiative
and follow through effectively. As supervisor, the candidate will hire, train,
supervise and evaluate support staff, develop and communicate departmental
goals, objectives, policies and procedures, and ensure staff receive
appropriate training and supervision.
Qualifications:
* Master's degree in Library & Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association plus at least 3 years experience; alternately an equivalent combination of education and experience. Supervisory experience required.
* Experience providing metadata/cataloging services within an academic or research library setting. Demonstrated functional knowledge of current cataloging practices, rules and standards such as RDA, LCSH, LC Classification, and MARC and an understanding of the principles of authority control. Ability to perform original and advanced copy cataloging and record maintenance on a variety of e-formats; integrating resources (databases/websites), e-books and serials.
* Technical abilities in the area of integration of disparate data sources. Experience with and knowledge of data manipulation tools such as MARC Edit, OpenRefine and/or Data Wrangler. Demonstrated receptiveness to and understanding of emerging information technologies.
* Demonstrated ability to establish priorities, set performance expectations, implement efficient workflows, achieve goals, create documentation, and direct work in a high-production setting.
* Ability to demonstrate appropriate professional qualifications; ability to interact with community in a professional and collegial manner and to embrace the diversity of the Libraries' users and staff; excellent communication and interpersonal skills, congenial; ability to take initiative; thoroughness, exceptional organizational skills, and ability to flourish in a high-intensity work environment; demonstrated creativity in fostering new ideas and in implementing change.
