Head of Digital Library Development
California Institute of Technology
Pasadena

Head of Digital Library Development

About Caltech and Caltech Library

The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) is a world-renowned science
and engineering research and education institution, where extraordinary
faculty and students seek answers to complex questions, discover new
knowledge, lead innovation, and transform our future. Founded by Caltech
faculty, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is a division of Caltech and
is the leading U.S. center for the robotic exploration of the solar system.
For the fourth year in a row, Caltech was named the top university in the
world in 2014-15 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
Caltech was awarded "Great College to Work For" by the Chronicle of Higher
Education in 2013.

Caltech's 124-acre campus is located in Pasadena, California. Home to the Rose
Bowl Parade, Pasadena is located in the foothills of the Angeles National
Forest, 10 miles from downtown Los Angeles.

The Caltech Library system comprises five libraries and Archives and Special
Collections. The Library's 42 staff is divided across four units that reflect
the Library's core areas of service to Caltech: Digital Library Development,
Access and Fulfillment Services, Archives and Special Collections, and
Research Services.

The Caltech Library helps enable the Institute fulfill its mission to expand
human knowledge through research integrated with education. The Library is
most effective when it mirrors how Caltech itself works--its ambition to take
on challenging and fundamental problems through creative, collaborative and
multidisciplinary inquiry. The Head of Digital Library Development will
support a well-established repository program and develop strategies to expand
the reach of the Library as a robust and adaptable platform for innovation and
new services to Caltech and beyond.

In 2014 Caltech faculty adopted an Open Access policy, which grants
nonexclusive rights to the Institute to disseminate faculty papers. The
Caltech Library supports this policy through CaltechAUTHORS as well as
outreach and consultation on a range of scholarly communication issues. The
Library is also active in scholarly communication collaborative initiatives
such as SPARC, arXiv, and ORCID. The Library participates in a variety of
Library and standards bodies, including the Digital Preservation Network, the
Coalition for Networked Information, NISO, OCLC Research, the Western Regional
Storage Trust (WEST), and the Statewide California Electronic Library
Consortium (SCELC).

Job Summary

The Caltech Library is recruiting a Head of Digital Library Development to
design and implement an overall digital library strategy that responds to
current and emerging needs and that leverages the strengths of an institution
of Caltech's size and prominence. This newly created position will be a key
member of the Library's executive leadership team.

The Digital Library Development department is composed of 3 librarians and 6
IT professionals. The department supports CaltechAUTHORS and other
repositories on the EPrints platform; digitized Archives collections on the
Islandora digital Library platform; the III ILS and SFX discovery tools; the
Library's website; public and staff desktop computing; and core
infrastructure.

In addition to supporting applications development and core infrastructure,
the Digital Library Development department serves as an R&D engine within the
organization. It maintains capacity to undertake pilot projects; is

interests; and participate in national-level groups working at the
intersection of scholarly communication and digital libraries. The Library
partners closely with other research and service units on campus, including
the six academic divisions, Information Management Systems and Services
(IMSS), Offices of Legal Affairs and Research Compliance.

learning and research. S/he will be a leader in increasing the Library's
