Associate Dean for Technology and Digital Strategies
Pennsylvania State University
University Park

Welcome to an exciting time at Penn State! With new University leadership
imparting fresh vision and strategic direction, the Pennsylvania State
University Libraries are launching a new strategic plan focused on three areas
crucial to the success of any 21st century research library: Discovery, Access
and Preservation; Teaching and Learning; and Advancing University Research.

This is a unique opportunity to join a top-ten research library in advancing
this plan and shaping the future of the Penn State University Libraries. The
newly created Associate Dean for Technology and Digital Strategies position
blends roles across IT and digital services units. The successful candidate,
backed by an excellent team of colleagues, will lead strategic initiatives
spanning these realms in a dynamic, highly collaborative environment with
world-class IT infrastructure and an organizational culture that fosters
creativity and innovation.

The Libraries seek an outstanding individual to hold this faculty leadership
position.

The Associate Dean for Technology and Digital Strategies will provide
leadership and advocacy for information technology, digital initiatives,
repository services and resource discovery and access
services. The position will serve as administrator for the
Libraries' Department for Information Technologies, Publishing and Curation
Services, and Media Technology and Support Services as well as for cross-
organizational teams such as the Digital Preservation Strategies Team,
ScholarSphere (institutional repository) Service Team, and Hydra Strategy
Team. The Associate Dean for Technology and Digital Strategies will partner
with University Information Technology Services and other Penn State units and
colleges in building our digital future, continuing to enhance already strong
collaborations in repository services and learning technologies as well as
exploring new opportunities for collaboration across campus, the CIC
(Committee for Institutional Cooperation), and other universities and
institutions.

The portfolio of responsibility will include:

  * Digitization, digital reformatting, and digital library production
  * Digital preservation, curation, and data management
  * Repository services (ScholarSphere, Hydra)
  * User experience, content strategy, and user services
  * Digital scholarship, digital humanities, and e-science services
  * Discovery, access, and accessibility strategies
  * Emerging technology strategies
  * IT infrastructure and platforms management and support
  * Software and web applications development
  * Libraries' website management and services
  * Service desk and workstation management
  * Multimedia technologies
We are committed to recruiting the best person for the job. The person in this
role will be committed to technology as a public service and have a keen
understanding of its potential to transform teaching, research, and learning
endeavors, forging new knowledge and preserving it for continuing access. The
successful candidate will embrace highly collaborative leadership, be forward-
thinking, and encourage innovation and experimentation. Flexibility and
adaptability are key. The final portfolio of responsibilities may shift and
will continue to evolve in response to the interests of the selected
candidate, the synergies of the administrative team, and the ever-changing
needs of the organization and the people it serves.

Requires a Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited institution
or an appropriate graduate degree in a relevant field; substantial experience
at or related to an academic, special, or research library; a national
reputation for distinguished scholarship and professional accomplishment;
strong record of service in an appropriate professional or disciplinary
association; excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal
skills; and a desire to work in a collaborative, student-centered and
research-intensive environment. We seek a strategic and
empathetic visionary who has experience working with strong self-sufficient
teams and a commitment to shared governance.

This is a tenure-track faculty position. Based upon the University and
Libraries' standards in librarianship, research, service and outreach, it is
anticipated that the successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of
Librarian with tenure, however rank and salary are dependent upon
qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include liberal vacation,
excellent insurance and health care coverage, state or TIAA/CREF retirement
options, and educational privileges.
