Web and User Experience Librarian
Wilfrid Laurier University Library

**Duties & Responsibilities**  
• In collaboration with the Head of Digital Initiatives and departmental
staff, oversees development and support of the Library web site interface and
other online services, by applying the principles and best practices of user-
centred design

• Works with Library units to research, identify and implement innovative
technologies which enhance access to library collections and services
including the broad scope of data created through digital scholarship

• Develops and implements standards to ensure a consistent user experience
when integrating Library resources and services into university and consortial
platforms

• Administers and applies usability and accessibility testing, surveys, usage
statistics, performance metrics and stakeholder feedback to evaluate and
strategically improve the user experience

• Applies sound project management and prototyping principles to ensure
changes are introduced with meaningful consultation, realistic timelines,
adequate resourcing and effective communication

• Provides training and support for Library staff involved in online content
creation and management

• Maintains working knowledge of online accessibility and metadata standards
related to information discovery and dissemination

• Acts as liaison librarian to one or more campus departments or programs,
including responsibility for collections, faculty outreach, instruction and
reference consultations

• Serves on Library, University, and external committees and participates in
scholarly and professional activity

  
**Qualifications**  
  
Required

• ALA accredited MLIS or equivalent

• Recent work experience in web design or development using content management
systems (Drupal preferred)

• Experience planning and implementing new projects and services

• Familiarity with standards and guidelines for online accessibility,
metadata, and with principles and best practices for user-centered web design

• Understanding of tools and methods relevant to evaluation and assessment of
digital services and online user experience (e.g. Google Analytics, usability
testing)

• Demonstrated experience with search and discovery tools (eg. EDS, Summon,
Primo), link resolvers, proxy servers and e-resource management tools.

• Experience with standard web programming languages such as PHP, SQL, HTML5,
CSS, JavaScript

• Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in the use of APIs for interface
design and service integration.

• Strong analytical, problem solving and troubleshooting skills

• Ability to work independently and to take initiative

• Demonstrated ability to manage a diverse workload and to work in a changing
environment

• Experience creating and delivering effective training or instruction

• Demonstrable understanding of current library practice, including collection
management, reference and instructional services

• Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills,
including the ability to work collegially and co-operatively with diverse
groups

• Demonstrated public service commitment

• Experience delivering reference service or providing customer support

  
Preferred

• Additional graduate degree in a relevant discipline

• Demonstrated professional or scholarly activities

• Work experience in an academic library

  
  
**Appointment Type & Salary**  
This is a full time continuing stream appointment. Salary
will be commensurate with experience and academic/professional qualifications.
Salary, benefits and terms of employment are governed by the Wilfrid Laurier
University Faculty Association Full-Time collective agreement, at
