RESPONSIBILITIES
Northern Illinois University seeks an enthusiastic and flexible
individual to join the Library’s Digital Initiatives unit. The Drupal
Developer & Digital Repository Specialist will continue the design and
development of a technical infrastructure to support the management,
preservation and appropriate access to library collections and digital
scholarship at NIU. This position is responsible for the research,
development, and ongoing maintenance of the library’s digital
repository, running in Islandora/Fedora. The Drupal Developer & Digital
Repository Specialist works with library staff to plan and design new
websites and uses new web service technologies related to the repository
to improve the user experience in discovering, finding, or acquiring
library content.
Scheduled work hours are 8-4:30, M-F

REQUIRED SKILLS
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field, or 3-5 years
related work experience
Experience working with the Drupal content management system
In-depth knowledge of Drupal site building, theming, and coding of
modules
Demonstrated ability to create and adopt custom Drupal modules
Facility with and enthusiasm for open source software
Fluency in web scripting languages such as PHP
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Flexibility and willingness to collaborate with both technical and
non-technical staff in a team/ cooperative environment.
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously
Ability to work well independently and to troubleshoot problems
creatively
This is a security-sensitive position. Before any offer of employment

PREFERRED SKILLS
Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Science, Library
Science, or related field
Knowledge of or direct experience with Fedora Commons and Islandora
Knowledge of data transformation techniques utilizing XML and related
technologies
Knowledge of additional scripting languages such as Perl, Python, Ruby
Experience working with APIs, RESTful web services, JSON, and/or AJAX
Experience with or knowledge of maintenance of MySQL databases
Basic web server administration experience (Apache, Tomcat,
Linux/Unix)
Awareness of metadata schemes used in library environment
Experience working with Apache SOLR/Lucene search platform
Experience with versioning system (e.g. GitHub)
Knowledge of semantic web technologies and web ontology languages (RDF
and/or OWL)
Excellent sense of visual design, graphic production, and information
architecture
Supervisory experience
