Position Description:
The California Digital Library (CDL) is a collaborative effort of the ten
campuses of the University of California designed to enable UC's libraries to
continue to meet the informational needs of UC's faculty and students in the
21st century. The CDL assumes a leadership role in providing digital content
to the citizens of the state, develops systems that encourage resource
sharing, and provides a focus for the development of strategies and
initiatives that guide the University's libraries through the transformations
necessary to succeed in the digital age.
Experienced digital library services product manager to manage large metadata
management system developed by the California Digital Library in support of
the University's commitment to advance the mission and goals of the HathiTrust
(www.hathitrust.org). Works with the Discovery and Delivery team, comprised of
experienced analysts, product managers and developers to develop large scale
digital library services in response to the changing needs of students,
faculty and staff. As a metadata expert, with interest in
linking data, develops strategies for metadata capture, normalization,
transformation, storage, enrichment and output. Possesses project management
skills and digital library services domain knowledge, including mass
digitization and large scale repositories. Creates and maintains strong
partner relationships. Develops and participates in
outreach activities with University of California students, faculty and
librarians as well as the larger digital library community.
Job Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Information Management or related subject specialty and
at least 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of
education and experience which includes metadata analysis and support in a
production environment.
Broad knowledge of product development concepts, practices, standards and
processes in digital libraries.
Demonstrated ability to identify issues critical to the organization's needs
and the success of a desired product, service, or enhancement.
Proven ability to research, collect and analyze information to use in
determining product options or alternatives. Ability to use
evidence based research to persuade development partners to address product
gaps, or propose alternative solutions.
Strong organization and project management skills, including facilitation,
presentation and strong interpersonal skills.
Strong oral communication skills to effectively convey and explain
information. Strong written communications skills to draft
clear, concise documentation, reports and specifications.
Demonstrable ability to crystallize requirements and work with technical
implementers.
Demonstrated ability to analyze digital project requirements and develop
strategies for metadata capture, normalization, transformation, storage,
enrichment and output in support of project.
Demonstrated experience leading, building consensus and promoting the exchange
of information among project team, internal and external constituencies.
Knowledge of academic library and digital library industry trends.
Demonstrated proficiency in metadata standards, current and evolving.
Demonstrated experience in working with files of metadata records, including
machine readable cataloging (MARC) records, XML, Dublin Core, METS and other
metadata.
Demonstrated experience in automating and streamlining metadata creation,
analysis and management using a variety of tools for metadata manipulation and
scripting.
Strong partner relationship management skills, including the ability to work
effectively with both vendors and partners to shape product development and
enhancements.
Demonstrated experience in recommending, designing and implementing
appropriate metadata schemes for digital library projects.
Master's degree in Information Sciences or related subject specialty
(Preferred).
