IIT Libraries seeks an innovative and collaborative professional to serve as
Discovery and Metadata Librarian. The Discovery and Metadata Librarian will
collaborate with library colleagues to ensure the provision of access to
materials held in the various units of University Archives and Special
Collections and in the library's print and digital collections and
repositories, by performing original and copy cataloging using descriptive
standards, and utilizing a variety of encoding standards. The incumbent in
cooperation with the Head of University Archives and Special Collections, the
University Archivist, and the Digital Initiatives Librarian as well as other
relevant staff throughout the library will provide leadership and direction in
metadata and metadata projects that advance the strategic direction of the
library and of the University. This position will participate in secondary
assignments based on qualifications, interests, and institutional need. These
may include involvement in integrated library system and/or e-book platform
evaluation and implementation, Electronic Theses & Dissertation policy and
process support, and/or collection development and analysis projects.

  
Key Responsibility 1

Provide guidance and oversight for the implementation of metadata schema for
the Library that fosters access and discovery across platforms. Perform
original and complex copy cataloging using descriptive standards and a variety
of encoding standards to support access to materials held in Archives and
Special Collections and in digital collections and repositories.

  
Key Responsibility 2

Collaborate with individuals, departments, Library committees, and task forces
on the development of initiatives supporting the growth, maintenance, and
ongoing sustainability of IIT's current and future print and digital archives
and special collections. Train and mentor staff involved in metadata projects
on the application of metadata in support of archival and digital collection
development. Provide oversight and supervision of the process and personnel
involved in applying metadata for various archives and special collections
related projects and initiatives. Create documentation on the workflow and
best practices for overall management of non-MARC metadata at the Library.

  
Key Responsibility 3

Communicate activities to library administration through reports, statistical
analysis, and other appropriate methods on a monthly and annual basis. Provide
statistical data as requested for outside reporting agencies. Provide support
for library assessment projects particularly as they related to discovery and
access to digital resources and collections. Participate in the creation and
submission of grant applications.

  
Key Responsibility 4

Participate in other projects and initiatives to be determined based on the
strategic direction of the university and library and the priorities and needs
of the library. Participation may include involvement in such projects as ILS
and/or e-book platform evaluation and implementation, Electronic Thesis &
Dissertation policy and process support, support for the institutional
repository, and/or collection development and analysis projects.

  
Key Responsibility 5

In collaboration and consultation with other library staff, formulate and
document policies and procedures for the creation and maintenance of
bibliographic records in the library's integrated library system, I-Share, for
digital archives and special collections which will be discoverable through
the ILS. Make specific contributions to ensure the interoperability and
sustainability of metadata in bibliographic systems within the library.

  
Key Responsibility 6

Actively participate in professional development activities at the national,
regional, and/or local level. Participate in library committees, task forces,
and teams. Remain current with metadata and digital library development
standards and trends.

  
Communications:

Demonstrate excellence in oral and written communications skills with internal
and external contacts. Written communication includes, but is not limited to,
reports, planning documents, memos, professional correspondence, management
presentations, grant writing, and internal correspondence. Verbal
communication includes regular and active participation in interdepartmental
committees and task forces, as well as with individual staff. External
contacts include library consortia members, community members, professional
organizations, researchers, and donors.

  
Customer Service:

Provide service to faculty, students, and staff at IIT's Main Campus.
Appreciate a multicultural academic and research environment. Demonstrate a
commitment to service excellence. Represent IIT Libraries externally in
professional activities and with external partners.

  
Education & Experience:

Master's degree in Library Information Science or graduate degree in a
relevant discipline.
