The European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere
(ESO) is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organisation in Europe and
the world's most productive astronomical observatory. ESO operates three
unique world-class observing sites in the Atacama Desert region of Chile: La
Silla, Paranal and Chajnantor. The ESO Headquarters are located in Garching,
near Munich, Germany. ESO is the focal point for Europe's participation in the
Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) consortium, which is operating a large
submillimetre array in the Chilean Andes. The construction of the European
Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) is also currently underway.
For the Directorate for Science at its Headquarters in Garching near Munich,
Germany, ESO is opening the position of
_**Library Technology Specialist**_
In order to fulfill the information needs of scientists and engineers in
Garching and Chile, the ESO libraries develop and maintain information systems
and provide print and electronic collections. This **fixed term position of
one year **would be ideal for an early stage career professional who would be
responsible for the efficient and innovative use of existing library systems
and to further develop and implement features, using new technologies in an
evolving environment.
**Main Duties and Responsibilities:**
* System librarian tasks: (a) technical maintenance and further development of specialised library databases/applications (Sybase/MySQL databases with PHP-based user interface) (b) maintenance of open-source library system Koha in cooperation with service provider, MARC import of licensed ebooks (c) maintenance of web pages via a Content Management System (CMS);
* Collection management including acquisitions, cataloging, technical book and journal services and document delivery;
* Provide search assistance to library users;
* Monitor trends and developments in information technology.
**Reports to:**
The post holder will report to and work in close cooperation with the Head
Librarian
**Experience:**
A degree in librarianship or equivalent, preferably with at least two years of
experience in a scientific library. The post holder must have advanced
knowledge of library information services and systems as well as using web
content management software and application of metadata standards. Experience
in database technology and programming languages (MySQL, PHP) is crucial and
knowledge of Apache/Solr would be an asset.
**Key Competences:**
The post holder will be a highly motivated and forward thinking individual.
He/she should have the proven ability to find innovative and creative
solutions in an evolving information environment combined with a user focused
work approach. He/she should be able to work on their own and also work
collaboratively in a small team. Excellent oral and written communication
skills along with a proactive attitude are required.
**Language Skills:**
The position requires a very good working knowledge of English.

The contract is for a fixed term period of one year only. Although the
position is ideal for someone in the early stage of their career, remuneration
is subject to change according to qualifications and number of years of
