Summary
Reporting to and working closely with the Head, Special Collections and
Archives, the Historical Records Project Archivist will work collaboratively
to bring wider access to the archival collections by surveying the
institutional records and historical collections held by the Schaffer Library
at Union College. The position is responsible for gathering, interpreting, and
depositing in the ArchivesSpace database, basic data about the collections.
Data gathering will consist of collating existing information from legacy data
and updating information in ArchivesSpace as new data is compiled. The new
data will be used, both in the future and also while in the process of being
collected, to identify future needs concerning space planning, collection
preservation, records retention, processing and digitizing. The position will
oversee student workers and is expected to follow accepted archival principles
and standards for manuscript and archival handling and descriptive practices.
Qualifications
The position requires a Master's degree in library or information science with
a concentration in archives or equivalent, a minimum of 2 years professional
experience working in an archival setting, preferably in a college or
university, and a solid understanding of manuscript and archival records
handling and descriptive practices. Also required is an in depth understanding
of and experience with library and archival information systems such as
ArchivesSpace, Archivists Toolkit or related collections management software,
experience with spreadsheet and database software such as Excel, Access,
MySQL, broad historical research and analytical skills, effective writing
skills with attention to detail, and the ability to lift up to 40 lbs.
Preferred qualifications include: Background in U.S. history or American
Studies, experience supervising student employees, ability to plan, manage and
coordinate complex projects to meet deadlines, ability to work both
independently and collaboratively with Library colleagues and members of the
Union College community, ability to tolerate ambiguity and be adaptable to a
work setting in which interruptions or scheduling changes are common, a
commitment to diversity and inclusiveness, safety consciousness and
certification by the Academy of Certified Archivists (ACA).
