The Hesburgh Libraries at the University of Notre Dame is seeking a motivated,
outgoing, and passionate individual to join a group of experts within our
Center for Digital Scholarship to support our growing digital collection and
outreach needs. The Digital Collections Librarian will be responsible for
developing, managing, and giving guidance on digital collections that are
created by the library and other units around the University.

  
The preferred candidate will work closely with the Libraries' digitization and
IT development units to consult on projects as well as to manage content that
is created for the institutional repository and/or exhibits platform. The
individual will ensure effective and efficient capture and ingest of an
increasing amount of digital content by applying professional skills in
project management and digital collection development and applied technical
abilities in repository ingest.

  
Primary Responsibilities:

  * Assists Notre Dame faculty, staff, and students in curating meaningful digital collections and scholarly content into Notre Dame's institutional repository (CurateND: http://curate.nd.edu)
  * Performs regular outreach with faculty, students, and academic departments in collaboration with subject librarians in order to identify new meaningful digital collections for Notre Dame's institutional repository
  * Documents user needs and feedback through outreach and consultation with library and campus customers
  * Within a team of product owners, shapes the product vision of digital tools such as the institutional repository to meet those customer needs
  * Helps prioritize the backlog of new features and enhancements.
  * In collaboration with technical leads, selects features for development by the Digital Library Technologies Unit
  * In coordination with the Libraries' copyright support, assesses possible licensing or other rights concerns with archiving and sharing a collection
  * Assists with contributions of the Hesburgh Libraries to external partner projects such as HathiTrust, APTrust, and DPLA to strengthen the presence of Notre Dame's specialized collections within these collaborative projects
Additional responsibilities may include:

  * Assesses digitization and other material preparation needs
  * Archives published or unpublished work in conjunction with faculty members' CVs
  * Creates, develops, implements, and documents strategies for metadata applied to a collection
  * In support of the digitization and description of manuscripts and other rare collections, work with curators in the Rare Books and Special Collections to:
  * Refine and develop digital collection standards and processes
  * Provide training and support to curators and other members of the department to assist them in creating records for enhanced presentation, discoverability, and interoperability of digitized special collections
  * For targeted faculty or special collections projects, coordinates and/or assists with loading batches of metadata and material for ingest into the institutional repository
  * Develops and delivers technical presentations, education and training materials
  * Manages student workers as necessary
  * May be tasked with leading a team
Required Qualifications:

  * ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent advanced graduate degree is required.
  * Understanding of issues related to institutional repositories, such as collection management and intellectual property issues
  * Experience working with both large and small digital collections including metadata, licensing, and quality control of materials
  * Working knowledge of current metadata standards such as Dublin Core, MODS, and METS.
  * Knowledge of appropriate digital library technologies and related accepted best practices, digital curation, and web-based applications
  * Strong desire to work closely with faculty and students
  * Evidence of creative thinking about library services and technologies;
  * Demonstrated desire to connect people and information;
  * Excellent organizational skills, and effectiveness in balancing multiple assignments and projects;
  * Ability to analyze, implement and adapt to evolving technologies;
  * Demonstrated high level of initiative and creativity;
  * Effective oral and written communication;
  * Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work successfully in an intensely collaborative environment, including colleagues, administrators, students, faculty, donors, and alumni
Preferred Qualifications:

  * Experience working with digital repository systems such as DSpace and Fedora Commons
  * Experience working as a product owner for a technology project
  * Experience gathering requirements and drafting user personas and stories
  * Familiarity with data management practices and services;
  * Experience digitizing images, manuscripts, or other rare materials
