**Duties & Responsibilities **
_**This is a fully benefited, full-time Harvard University position that has
been funded until December 31, 2017. There is the
possibility of renewal, contingent on funding, university priorities and
satisfactory job performance.**_
Reporting to the Director, Library Systems, Library Technology Service (LTS),
Harvard University Information Technology (HUIT) seeks a Systems Librarian.
This role will be a member of a high performing team that works to ensure that
enterprise library technology advance scholarship and teaching through the
collection, creation, application, preservation, and dissemination of
knowledge. LTS works in deep collaboration with the Harvard Library (HL), one
of the premier research libraries in the world, as well as with HUIT's
Academic Technology team to ensure that library materials and services are
effectively embedded into the academic enterprise. Systems include HOLLIS
Classic/Aleph (integrated library system), HOLLIS (Primo discovery system),
DRS (Digital Repository Service), Cognos (library reporting system), MetaLib
(federated searching and electronic resource discovery tool), SFX (link server
and electronic journals discovery tool), EZProxy (authentication system),
Verde (electronic resources management system), ILLiad (interlibrary loan
system), Aeon (special collections system), and Borrow Direct (interlibrary
loan system), Visual Collection systems, archives management systems, and
others.
With primary responsibilities for technical services systems and services, the
Systems Librarian works closely with library staff to conduct business
analysis and identify objectives and requirements for systems and services.
Typical projects and initiatives include technical services process
efficiencies (Direct to Destination, Optimizing Monographic Series Standing
Orders), usage assessment analysis (E-Resource Usage Statistics), and
e-resource management process review (PCI Index Management). This person, as a
member of Library Systems group, will collaborate with Harvard Library staff
as well as other groups within LTS and HUIT to implement the appropriate
technology solutions and tools.
Key responsibilities of the position will be systems analysis and
customization, project planning and management, and user support. Successful
candidates will have significant knowledge of current metadata standards,
technical services workflows, and technologies used to efficiently purchase,
describe, and manage large collections.
**Basic Qualifications **
• Masters in Library
and Information Science or equivalent experience required
• 3+ years
progressive experience in technical analysis, computer systems and/or web
interface design, complex system configuration, programming or technical
implementation for library systems and services.
• 2+ years hands on
experience in technical service functions in a research library or equivalent.

• Must have
demonstrated strong analytic skills, verbal and written communication skills,
including the ability to describe complex functions and processes coherently,
unambiguously, and in a well-organized fashion.
• Strong project
management and organizational skills.
• Ability to learn
new technical skills quickly and to work under pressure.
• Ability to work in
multiple operating system environments, e.g. Linux, Solaris, Windows.
• Ability to design
and implement moderately complex processes and/or systems in a relevant
language or technology.
• Ability to write
scripts and/or use relevant system utilities.
• Ability to
train/mentor more junior staff in various technical skills.
• Ability to work
well with library staff at a range of levels individually and on committees
• Ability to carry
out projects with limited supervision, scheduling own time and setting own
priorities to meet multiple competing priorities and overlapping deadlines
• Demonstrated
creativity, initiative, and sense of responsibility for achieving the goals of
the organization
• Experience with
Aleph/HOLLIS, desirable
• Experience working
in a Harvard library, desirable
