The University of Illinois at Chicago Library and Chicago Collections
are pleased to announce the release of Metadata Hopper, an
administrative tool for the eXtensible Text Framework digital library
platform from the California Digital Library.
Metadata Hopper is the tool that was used to enable multiple partner
libraries to contribute EAD, MARC and image metadata to Explore Chicago
Collections, which is an XTF-based shared research portal to Chicago
historical and cultural materials at multiple libraries and
museums.(http://explore.chicagocollections.org)
Metadata Hopper allows archivists and librarians to deposit both finding
aids and digital images into a single XTF repository even when there are
disparate metadata standards. It allows these users to tailor the
navigation facet terms through 'tags', a shared vocabulary through
Metadata Hopper. Metadata Hopper also provides an autotagging feature,
which applies controlled vocabulary terms upon deposit based on the
original metadata terms.Lastly, Metadata Hopper generates a "dc.xml"
metadata file, the mechanism that XTF uses to work alongside the
original metadata file to provide consistency in search and browse results.
While Metadata Hopper was used for the Explore Chicago Collections
portal, it was designed to be extensible to other contexts. The Hopper
manager can tailor metadata mapping rules, set up controlled
vocabularies and configure autotagging rules. The format of the output
"dc.xml" file is entirely configurable by the manager. Metadata Hopper
is a Django application and is available for download from Bitbucket.
(https://bitbucket.org/uiclibrary/portal-admin/)This release includes
documentation for archivists (who deposit content), managers (who set up
Metadata Hopper vocabularies and mapping rules) and system administrators.
