The ASU Libraries invites applications for the position of
Metadata Librarian in the Bibliographic & Metadata Services department. The
department's six librarians and 21 staff is responsible for managing the
Libraries' approximately $11 million collections budget, acquiring materials
in all formats, and creating and maintaining metadata to facilitate discovery
of library resources. The department, serving ASU libraries on five campuses
plus ASU Online, works closely with other library staff on digital initiatives
and projects. Primary assignment is to support and improve the ASU Libraries
resource discovery services by maintaining and improving the Libraries ability
to process and load bibliographic data to the integrated library system
(Sierra), and manage and improve resource description activities for special
collections resources and Arizona government documents. Responsibilities also
include: contributing to departmental productivity and efficient operation
through documentation and reporting of dataload activities, collaboration with
staff performing resource description activities; determining policies and
practices for assigned workflows; supporting metadata needs of the department;
working in close collaboration with library staff devoted to acquisitions,
batch processing, electronic resources management, repositories, etc.
Associated duties include supporting the metadata needs of the ASU Digital
Repository, and the digital projects and research data management teams. The
Metadata Librarian works as a member of the Metadata unit, reporting to the
Librarian for Metadata Analysis within the Bibliographic & Metadata Services
department. This is a year-to-year academic professional position.
Required Qualifications: American Library Association accredited MLS, MIS or
equivalent advanced degree in library or information science to be completed
by date of hire; demonstrated experience in bibliographic data processing;
demonstrated experience in resource description; demonstrated experience with
standards for bibliographic and authority data (e.g. MARC, AACR2, RDA, LCSH,
LCC).
Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated experience with integrated library
systems and complex bibliographic databases; strong service orientation and
excellent analytical and problem-solving skills; successful experience with
project management and collaborative project development; demonstrated ability
to effectively organize and manage multiple, simultaneous projects, develop
efficient workflows and procedures and balance competing demands; demonstrated
experience creating and working with authority data (LC Authorities, VIAF);
experience with non-Marc metadata, particularly Dublin Core, EAD/EAC, METS and
PREMIS; demonstrated experience in documenting procedures and writing
specifications; experience with metadata analysis tools and editors;
experience working on digital repository records and projects; experience with
knowledge bases and other process-control devices, applied to bibliographic
services; knowledge of character encoding systems and methods; knowledge of
semantic web, linked data principles and RDF; aptitude for learning new
technologies and metadata standards; excellent communication and analytic
skills, including the ability to work well in a team-based environment.
Salary: $49,000 minimum; rank of Assistant or Associate, depending on
experience.
