Supervisor, Metadata Librarian

The National Geographic Society Library seeks an energetic, knowledgeable and
self-motivated supervisory metadata librarian to specialize in the creation,
analysis and maintenance of digital and print collections. Incumbent will
employ independent, critical thinking, embrace change and seek out new
opportunities for innovation and improvement to arrive at new solutions to
both new and traditional information management challenges.
The supervisory librarian is responsible for collecting, preserving, and
presenting print and digital information in all formats, creating and applying
metadata schemas and indexing to institutional data repositories,
bibliographic and archival databases and collections, books, ebooks and other
items, as required. This includes metadata application, creating and applying
controlled vocabularies, authority and quality control, and other duties
associated with the creation and maintenance and access of item- and
collection-level data for a variety of print and digital content and
materials.
This position requires a firm and broad conceptual understanding of metadata
principles and archival and digital collection technologies and the ability to
apply and adapt them to existing and emerging media in a variety of formats.
The Librarian will participate in the management of e-resources and assist
with the expansion of online collections and new digital initiatives. This
person will acts as an active partner with technology vendors, providing
feedback, suggesting improvements, and keeping the needs of the clients in the
forefront.
When required, this individual provides reference services and processes
payments for all print and digital monographs, serials, databases, and other
acquisitions: places orders, processes renewals, and resolves complex service
problems.
Responsibilities
Applies metadata for a wide range of formats, including serials, non-print
materials, and e-resources, using current and emerging metadata schemas,
principles and practices such as MARC, Library of Congress classification,
Dublin Core, RDA and XML. (40%)
Administers discovery systems, including Polaris and Springshare Libguides, to
ensure reliable access to subscription-based information and research
resources. Administers the OCLC interlibrary lending management system
upgrades and provides interlibrary loan services. (20%)
Provides reference services as needed and processes payments for all print and
digital monographs, serials, databases, office supply and other acquisitions:
places orders, processes renewals, and resolves complex service
problems. (25%)
Provides expert metadata consulting services for Library and enterprise
projects. Employs emerging metadata schemas to link content across multiple
data repositories, and improve search optimization and discoverability of
internal and external data. (10%)
Determines current and future library automation requirements, recommends
solutions and changes. (5%)
Requirements
Project management experience.
Knowledge of, and experience in applying electronic, traditional and emerging
metadata standards (AACR2, Library of Congress classification and subjects,
MARC formats).
Experience in an automated environment using Polaris or similar cataloging
environment.
Experience using OCLC Iliad or similar automated interlibrary services system
Demonstrated knowledge of metadata schemas (MARC, Library of Congress
classification, Dublin Core, RDA, XML, RDF).
Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills with ability
to communicate complex information effectively
Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a
team-based environment.
Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects.
Ability to operate, maintain and evaluate data and digitization management
systems.
Ability to learn specialized library software and hardware applications.
