**Job Summary**
The University of Michigan Library is seeking a skilled programmer to help
create and maintain large scale digital library and publishing systems. The
successful candidate will work as part of a team of programmers, librarians,
and designers on major initiatives, including the creation of a new system
architecture to serve the U-M Library and campus built on Hydra and Fedora.
The new system will make use of recent developments in the open source
community and will handle a wide array of materials: research data sets,
historical records, 3-D models, audio, video and more. This is an opportunity
to join a skilled and forward thinking group and to gain experience with
modern technologies that support digital preservation, research, publishing,
archives and broad public access.

Note: This is a two-year term-limited position.
**Responsibilities***
* Participate in the analysis of business and user needs, and the design of solutions involving computer systems and software.
* Develop, debug, modify and maintain complex software systems, including the full stack of components behind data driven web applications and APIs.
* Configure and customize open source software and engage in collaborative development activity using modern tools and techniques.
* Engage with an active community, within the Library and in the broader Hydra community, around best practices and future directions of the Hydra stack.
* Review system and software designs and prepare and conduct functional tests.
* Create and maintain internal documentation.
**Required Qualifications***
* Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field and three or more years experience, or an equivalent amount of experience and education.
* Demonstrated programming skills in a modern programming language.
* Experience working in a Linux environment.
* Experience and comfort working collaboratively in a version-controlled codebase.
* Experience and comfort working directly with non-technical stakeholders.
* Understands and values diversity and the importance of inclusion as demonstrated through a commitment to apply and incorporate the differences, complexities, and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization.
* Intellectual curiosity and desire to discuss why we develop what we develop.

**Desired Qualifications***
* Experience with MVC (model/view/controller) framework-based, database-driven web development using technologies such as Ruby and Rails, MySQL, Perl, Java, XML, etc.
* Experience developing RESTful APIs.
* Knowledge of HTML5, CSS, JQuery, and JavaScript.
* Familiarity with applying WCAG 2.0 accessibility standards.
* Experience with Unix/Linux.
* Experience with version control systems such as GIT and GitHub.
* Experience with test-driven development.
* Experience with implementation of full-text search and retrieval systems.
