Assistant University Archivist for Records Management and Electronic Records

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a creative,
collaborative, enthusiastic professional for the position of Assistant
University Archivist for Records Management and Electronic Records. The
individual in this position will be responsible for managing the records
management program at UNC-Chapel Hill, working with departments and offices
across campus to arrange records transfers, and providing training and
consulting on records management practices and policies, including the
management of born-digital University records. The Assistant University
Archivist will also take on a leadership role in special collections
concerning electronic records and other born-digital collection materials,
serving as a consultant within the library on issues related to the
acquisition, appraisal, and preservation of electronic collection material.

  
Reporting to and working closely with the University Archivist, the Assistant
University Archivist will manage the appraisal, acquisition, and preservation
of records of the University and UNC General Administration with historical,
evidential, or administrative value to the University. The Assistant
University Archivist will work with other University Archives and Records
Management Services staff on outreach to University departments and on
training for University staff in the proper management of official records,
including digitized and born-digital records and email. The Archivist will be
available for regular consultation with campus offices regarding records
management issues and questions. The Assistant University Archivist will also
help with the development and revision of records management policies and
schedules.

  
The Assistant University Archivist will participate in the development and
implementation of the University Library's archival preservation standards for
digitized and born-digital materials to ensure that these adhere to accepted
professional standards. The Assistant University Archivist will work closely
with the staff of the Carolina Digital Repository to develop specifications,
and test and implement policies, tools, and workflows for ingesting and
managing born-digital materials. This work is likely to involve a variety of
file formats and storage media and will require creativity and a strong
understanding of best practices in format identification and migration. The
Assistant University Archivist will serve as an authority within the library
on the acquisition, appraisal, and management of electronic records. This work
may include assisting staff within special collections with the review of
electronic records and ingest of selected materials into the library's digital
repository. The incumbent will participate in University committees and other
groups to provide expertise on archival and preservation standards and on
North Carolina public records laws and regulations governing the management
and disposition of official electronic records.

  
The Assistant University Archivist may supervise graduate research assistants
and interns, and manage grant and other externally funded support for born-
digital materials and electronic records management as needed. The Archivist
will maintain an awareness of proposed and developing standards affecting
born-digital materials, and will represent the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill and its libraries at appropriate conferences and meetings related
to born-digital materials, records management, and institutional repositories.

  
The Assistant University Archivist will participate in public services with a
regular weekly reference desk shift and occasional weekend desk service. The
incumbent will also work with the University Archivist, Library Development,
and others on fund-raising, donor relations, and grant development.

  
The Assistant University Archivist will participate in Library-wide
initiatives and will serve on committees and task forces. The individual in
this position is expected to be active in scholarly and library professional
organizations and the academic community. Demonstrated professional
achievement, service, and scholarly/creative activity are required for
reappointment and promotion in rank.

  
**QUALIFICATIONS**  
  
**Required: **ALA accredited master's degree in library or information science or advanced degree in archives administration, public history or other relevant field. Two or more years' experience working in an archive or special collections library. Demonstrated knowledge of archives and records management principles and practices. Familiarity with tools and best practices for electronic records management and preservation. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with administrative staff, faculty, information technology staff, and library and curatorial staff. Superior interpersonal, communication, and writing skills. Evidence of commitment to the archival profession by memberships and participation in professional associations, and record of ongoing professional development and contribution.  
  
**Preferred: **Experience managing or assisting with the management of institutional records; experience working with an institutional repository; demonstrated experience working with digital forensics and digital preservation tools in the acquisition, appraisal, and preservation of born-digital library collections; familiarity with enterprise application software and document management systems.

**Salary and Benefits**  
This is a twelve-month academic librarian appointment; salary is commensurate
with qualifications and experience. Standard state benefits of annual leave,
sick leave, and State or optional retirement plan. At the University of North
